The first lock that you put on your bike, no matter how cheesy, is about 90% maybe even 95% effective because it forces the thief to use some kind of tool. To get from there to 100% you engage in a high tech game of progressive one-upmanship with the thief that you will ultimately lose.

Try to park next to a nicer bike that's protected with a crummier lock.

If this is for a college campus bike my advice is to get yourself a pos bike so you won't feel too badly when it gets stolen.

good lock :trainwreck: relatively light

Depends on your comfort level...where it's gonna be used. A U-lock is best for commuting/errand running.
I don't use one on club breakfast rides...don't want the extra hassle, weight, etc.
Go with the beefiest lock that you feel is light enough...whatever light means to you.

A lock that's too light will leave you without a bike, and you can't get any lighter than that.

Buy a lock to lock, not to be lightweight.

I think the gray kryonite ulock is pretty common "decent, but cheap and lightweight lock":

No lock is safe if the thief is determind to take your bike, i looked at these guys on Youtube showing how easy to cut off the steel bar/cable,their adviceS on locks are: PAY AS MUCH AS YOU CAN,CHEAP LOCKS ARE NO GOOD.
