Hi,

On my commute to work today (the streets were fairly wet), suddenly I felt a bit of a shift, hard to describe. No real audible sound, just suddenly pedals felt different. At the next light I was pedaling backwards and suddenly there was a lot of friction.

When I got to work I flipped my bike upside down, and now when I pedal backwards, the tire actually rotates backwards (only a little bit). So (i'm a bit of a bike mechanic noob) I guess my freewheel isn't really "free" anymore.

lol well I understand that gradual friction would build up in the freewheel, but the fact that it happened spontaneously has me a bit more worried. Any ideas on what it might be?

Oh in terms of info, I'm riding an Iron Horse Maverick '03, quite the entry level MTB, not sure if cheaper bikes are prone to problems like this when riding in the rain. Also the roads here are quite sandy still from the winter, so wet, muddy, gritty.

Appreciate any info/ideas,
-xan-

Your freewheel/freehub needs to be replaced.

I was looking for signs of wear and tear, couldn't find anything.

The reason I mentioned I had a cheaper bike, is I'm heard terms like "sealed hubs", this week is the most grit and rain I've ever put my bike through, is it possible that sand/mud just got in somewhere? Is this common? Is this something just common to cheap hubs?

Thanks,

In a bizarre turn of events...

When I left for work this morning, the friction was quite bad, now when I was pedalling in either direction (so must be in the drivetrain). Suddenly I go over a bump and then my cranks get STUCK. Like can't pedal at all. So I give the pedal a good kick and then guess what?

No extra friction at all in my drivetrain. Squeaking goes away, pedalling forwards and backwards feel like when the bike was new.

Hmm any theories?

If your cranks got stuck and the wheels were still turning, you have a bad bottom bracket.

your chain may be too tight try loosening it. or if that isnt the problem get some carburetor cleaner and spray your freewheel, it may be clogged with mud or dust.
