ya know, there are a lot of older lugged style frames that look really hideous (sp?) to me...
I've been liking newer-looking frames a lot more recently. Some of the more extravagant lug work seems gawdy and waaaaay to ornamental for my tastes...

um. you still haven't even figured out what i'm talking about. i had no questions about the operation of the bag... it was about the construction. given that you definately have no idea what i was talking about. back on topic.

It's highly conditional, of course, but in your case it seems to hold quite true. You have 7 posts and your IQ is preceded by a decimal point. Theoretically you could build up a massive post count and still remain an incurable f*cktard, but chances are you'll get distracted by something shiny long before that has a chance to happen.

excuse me funking Wrench? you obviously have no idea who I am....funk off...
lugs are a thing to like at times and to not like at times. as are most things that one may like at one point or another. i personally like a little lugging. that's part of why i decided on the crosscheck frame and fork. no lugs on the frame but a nice lugged style fork. that blood red paint will look so cool with the new campy mirage and some black spokes and rims with some khaki/beige bar tape and some nice aero bars. *drooooool* it'll ride good too!

It doesn't directly equate to your I.Q. BUT the quality and insight of the posts definately tells of your character and lack of intelligence.
At least on your part it does.
OK go ahead and flame away on me now...
I like lugs a lot, but you're right, when they get really overly ornamental it gets a bit much.

I agree, a nice simple lug with a contrasting color outlining it makes for a clean and professional look.

I am with you on this one. There are some nice lug works out there, like a Nagasawa. But the ornamental ones rub me the wrong way. I think what constitutes steel aesthetic is the small diameter tubing, not so much the lugs or welding. In that sense some of the newer steel bikes with oversize down tube and top tubes look hodge podge, much like aluminum bikes.

I can appreciate the workmanship of a fine lugged bike, but I guess as far as the aesthetics are concerned, I just prefer the clean lines of good welds and the transitions of CF bikes.

Yeah, so anyway. I think Columbines are awesome. Sure, I wouldn't probably ride it ( okay, maybe just to the cafe to sip lattes with on weekends ) but you have to admire the work, even if you can't relate to the aesthetic. There are plenty of hand cut lug designs out there that are super nice if you're not into 'ornate'.
I'm not sure how you can be into fixies and into steel, and compare the Columbines to something on antiques roadshow, and then compare it to a modern 'team bike' though. Since when did craftsmanship = corporate logos? How old do you think regular lug design is? "Like, something from the cool 70's"?
The thing is for me, is that if you're going to build a lugged bike and not customise the lugs in some way, then why bother? All you're doing then is just assembling parts. Everything is done for you. Then you're then just a guy with a torch. The process is not enough in my eyes.
I also think stuff like the Columbine is too ornate. I'm really fine with the simple lugs on my low-end 80s Fuji. They make a nice finish. But I wouldn't be able to ride something that looks like a piece of jewelry, nor would I want it hanging up in my garage. To me, Columbines look kind of like a gaudy Christmas tree. I appreciate the effort, but I just can't stomach it.
I think bikes should look like bikes; they should especially look like bikes that want to be ridden. To me, a lot of the welded frames look like some kind of space-pod: all one piece of unknown origin (although a lot of those frames are, in fact, pretty). The really ornate lugged frames look like freakin pieces of jewelry that should be put in a museum in front of a velvet backdrop. The ideal aesthetic for me is something like the frames Mercian puts out: exceptionally beautiful frames that make you want to ride them at exceptionally fast speeds.

well, I compared it to "team bikes" because its covered with ornamental detail in the same brainless
way that "team bikes" are covered with corporate logos. the ornamental detail is completely pointless
it doesnt relate to the aesthetics of a bike frame at all. and why shouldnt you compare it
to antiques? they have kitsch cups and gold framed mirrors next to their frames.

I dont know what you are trying to say here. It certainly doesnt go back to the baroque.
And even though art nouveau was ornamental it was based on organic forms of nature
in a stylised way. but then came modernism and the end of decorative details etc...
anyway, just because a technique originates from a certain period
doesnt mean that it has to stuck there forever. I dont see the columbine frames in that
tradition anyway. They live in the same world as bob ross paintings, porcelain puppies and
chippendale style furniture.
