I note that upon closer inspection he was using brakes on that bike. Maybe there is a lesson therein.
Not to start that flame war again though.

That person in the white car is having a very bad day. Not only did they just hit a cyclist, but they're also about to hit that blue car, hard. Seeing that the blue car and the cyclist are both in the intersection going the same way at the same time, I'd figure that the white car is somewhere they're not supposed to be. My assumption is that the brakes on the bike had little to do with it.

yeah. if you're gonna wear a helmet, you gotta buckle it. helmet saved my life on the track last week.

Why does it look like there's a flap attached to the helmet?

Something like that doesn't look that serious and I'm hoping it wasn't for the biker. I've seen someone who was doing a wheelie at 75mph on a motorcycle and when he landed he clipped the side of an SUV, went flying off, flew about 50 ft in the air doing 4-5 cartwheels and walked back to the bike.
If you fly off, tumble and roll, you have a lot of time to dissipate energy. OTOH, if that car had been like, a van or SUV, he would've suffered significant internal injuries.

Given the apparent conditions (looks kinda rainy), it could be a helmet cover. Or just debris (wallet, etc.)

I'd agree with you except for what appears to be a shattered windshield on the white car on the passenger side. Looks like he's coming off a bounce...

the picture seems a little too perfect. im going to have to say that (i hope) its a photoshopped fake... can someone give me a second opinion on the shadow on the roof of the blue car? it looks like its real but just seems fishy...

i gotta say that the pic looks real to me. too many good details. windscreen wipers on all the cars are in motion, for example. and the right wiper on the offending car is out of whack. also, the damage to the car and the position of the biker make sense. notice the broken side view mirror. and the potato chipped rear wheel of the bike.

oh, and that flap by the biker's head seems to be a piece of the bumper, shown from the inside angle.

the only thing that gives me pause is the fact that the biker is wearing a white tee-shirt in the rain. maybe on the way to some sort of contest?

That shot might have came from a traffic camera that is designed to take pictures of cars running red lights. There was a recent photo going around the internet of a driver in germany mowing down a pedestrian. It looked much worse than what happened to the guy in the above shot.

edit: found the links. These are graphic (no gore though), just so you know in advance.

when i first saw it, i was sure it was fake. however looking at it really closely in photoshop i can't find any obvious flaws. however, when i zoom out and look at it as a whole it seems strange. what's up with his left foot? that looks weird.

I'm betting he's a bike messenger.

to be a shattered windshield on the white car on the passenger side. Looks like he's coming off a bounce...

Shattered windshield=good. Crumple zone. The windshield fractures into thousands of tiny cubes and the plastic sheet that holds it together deforms and absorbs a lot of energy.
The impact would have thrown him onto the hood which would deform and absorb some energy then he'd bounce onto the windshield, break it, transfer more energy onto it, bounce off and tumble onto the ground. Kind of like being thrown against a concrete wall and drywall. One would hurt like hell while the other would buckle and soften the blow.

Unfortunately for him, his helmet flew off...

Whats wrong with white t-shirt in the rain?

nope. not a messenger. has a backpack on, not a messenger bag. plus, bike has toeclips. very few messengers use toeclips. plus, white socks and white shirt.

i've spent way too much time looking at this picture. . .well, i'm too injured to work, and i'm bored off my tuchus.

it's a backpack. trust me on this one. you can tell by the zipper pattern. plus, strap under arm is too small. you can see the double strap over shoulders if you zoom in.

as far as the toeclips go, i'm only talking percentage. i'd say less than 5% of messengers use toeclips nowadays. and by the look of the cars, i'd say it is a recent picture. pre 90's we used em, but not anymore.

toeclips are too hard to escape in emergencies and pulling up to a curb or pulling up to a stoppage, at least if they're used correctly. plus, clipping in takes too much time, as they are one-sided. most messengers use eggbeaters or speedplays. if they can't afford those, they use spuds. but IMO, spuds are equally as dangerous as clips.

also, notice the unchopped handlebars.

hey, there's always a chance that this is a messenger, but he'd be a rookie. and i bet this was his last day of work.

doesn't anyone have a picture of a car flipping over a bike?

His legs look ok to me. His left knee is bent so you can only see his shin/calf, and the foot is pointing off towards the Mustang. His right trouser leg is rolled up, presumably to keep it out of the chain. I'd say he's going to land on his right hip or on his legs, not a good way to land. And it doesn't matter how much energy was absorbed by the windshield, it's still gonna hurt like heck
