Hello,

Does anyone have opinions about the Jamis Aurora? I looked at one when I was bike shopping and it seemed nice enough but a little heavy and sluggish. I don't have any experience with touring bikes so I was wondering what other people think of it.

Thanks.

I have a 2002 model. Use it mainly for commuting and some small tours. On the newest model, 2004, they switched to V brakes which provide much more clearance for larger tires and fenders. Right now I'm rocking 25c tires wich barely fit with the Caliper brakes and fenders. Other than that I love the bike and have had no problems. I also think they upgraded the components on the 2004 so should be an even better deal. It might be a little heavier than other bikes but It's a steal frame (at least mine is) which makes a cushy ride.

Have fun

I have a 2004, used it to ride the C&O Canal, had no problems. Mine has like 1000 miles on it since I got it in March. I also use it to commute to work and rotate it in with my other bike for longer training rides. Mine isn't entirely stock, here is whats different:
WTB Speed V saddle
Deore cranks 48-36-26
Deore XT Cantilever brakes (new old stock)
Panaracer Pasela TG tires and thornproof tubes
Planet Bike Freddy Fenders
Avenir Heavy Duty rear rack
Shimano 525 pedals (ebay specials)
Cinelli Gel Tape

Let's see, the saddle was just a matter of preference, the cranks were swapped at no cost time of purchase to get some lower gearing for that cross country trip when I graduate college. Tires were a matter of preference because my town has so much debris on the road and I don't like being late for work. I changed out the brakes when the pads wore out just because they were laying around the bike shop where my friend works. The wheels have been fine, I'm a little over 200 pounds and they have been fine, my wrench friend said the Ritchey Hubs 0 dish system is the reason why I haven't had many problems.
I really love this bike, it rides like a Caddilac, I just used it on a 125 mile ride on Saturday and it was comfortable. I will be using it on a 200 mile ride in 2 weeks, definitely a bike that you can ride all day. The only issue I had was that I wanted to put bigger tires on but the front kinda maxs out at 32, 30 with my fender. It only mattered cause when I did the C&O canal I wanted to use 35 C's. I use 28's for everyday riding and when I do tour I throw a 32 on in the back. Great bike for the money in my opinion, compared it to the Fuji and was advised to go with the Jamis, rode both, Fuji is heavier. And my LBS carrys both so it wasn't an issue of them losing a sale.

Hope this helps, sorry it was so long but I know that when I was looking I couldn't find too many in depth reviews of it. Its not nearly as common as the 520 or the Cannondale so it was tough to find much info. Best of luck to ya!
