Best price for a wheel true that I could find from any area shop. Quality work in a timely fashion. Another thing, they didnt make me feel like a moron with 22yo wheels like another shop did.

Thanks Michael. Spin really is a cool shop with a lot of passion. All of us who work there take our cycling pretty seriously and I think it shows no matter if you roll up on a $10.00 thrift store bike or a $10,000 boutique special. We try to treat everyone fairly and with respect. Next time you pop in ask for me and say hi!

i've heard alot of badmouthing about your shop from the kids at the phoenix but i doubt many of them really know what they're talking about. i chatted for a second with blaze but i didn't get the name of the guy who took my wheels in. he looked to be one of the older guys there behind the counter. i seem to remember him having alot of piercings/earrings. i see tati as well whenever i get my black awake-juice. she's actually the one who referred me so here's a :thumb: for her too.

whoops! i got distracted when i was writing that and completely left out the point of that message and looking at it it sounds way different than the way i wanted it to and i exagerrate when i say "alot", more like mumblings.

i meant to say that i was thrilled to find out those mumblings are a bunch of bulls#!@. you guys are the friendliest pro shop i've ever come across. even the pro level drum shops (where i actually fit in!) don't treat me as well when i bring in old equipment that isn't the latest and greatest. i sincerely thank you.

since i do have an old bike and am not exactly equipped with the special tools to do major maintenance (BB, hub/freewheel, headset), would you be willing to work on it? i'm having difficulty finding a shop that'll work on an older bike.

Hey,
The best price and coolest folk to deal with is Fleet Cycle on Fleet Ave. Not only are they not stuck on stupid as far as acting stuckup, they are the lowest price cycle shop I have found on anything. The shop is owned by Al, an old school rocker who just is truly one of the coolest, modest, and respectful guys in cycling. They not only do all kinds of bike work, they sell old school bikes, single speed Schwinns from the 60-70's and beyond. One can find bikes there (10 speeds, BMX, tandems,...)that have been rehabbed from the frame up under 100.00. They even have some bikes there that are rare (Bamboo 3 wheeler from China).
I needed a crank for my sons bmx. He replaced the old one for 7.00, including labor. Beat that!

Al has been working on bikes probably for about 30+ years, and yet his shop seems like one found on the corner of your street, because it is. Fleet Bicycle Shop: 5002 Fleet Ave (diagnally across from the BP station by I-77) 441-3920 (216).

i'm thinking that is the way to go. especially since i'm currently located in kent and the east side is home but i'm trying to move to lakewood at the start of the new year.

do you guys offer classes in things like wheelbuilding and other specialized skills like that?

No, we do have a basic new rider seminar that teaches the basics to get you home safely like tube replacement and such but that's about it. Bryan (Wookie) is a VERY good wheelbuilder though.

Not trying to steal any of Spin's thunder at all, but I'm in Kent and have a pretty extensive home shop. Drop me a line if you ever need any help. I think I'm building some new wheels for my 29er soon, so if you wanna see how that goes, you're more than welcome to come over and check it out.

Another +1 for Spin. Broke a spoke yesterday and was near desperation since I really wanted to participate in the RATL on Saturday. Another shop (which shall remain nameless) thought they could help me but would levy an additional "convenience" charge since they had a week's backlog of service that I would have been preempting. The Spin guys fixed me up while I waited and their price could not be beat -- definitely no convenience surcharge. It's a great shop with great employees and I'll definitely be bringing my business back to them in the future.

+1000 for Spin. Being new to road bikes, coming in back in Jan/Feb and working with them to get the "right" bike, fitted and schooled in basics-. I remember some other shops looking and making me feel like a idiot if i was not ready to buy that day the 1,000 plus "entry level bikes" anything in a 600 to 999 range was junk- (ughhh why then is it on your floor adn why are you selling it? is wat I always wanted to ask)

Anyhow,
was going to buy a Rroubaix for over a grand at Spin: and we ended up putting me in a less expensive bike -08 Sequoia becuase it was the right bike for ME- I will always appreciate their candor, knowledge and patience... They could have put me in the Roubaix for 600 bucks more, they listened to my needs, goals and what I wanted out of a bike...

Spin is cool...

Was that Pete G's shop? If you remember Westgate Cycles, the old owner is my co-worker.

Some of us remember Heinz Linke and his shop on Madison Avenue, across from Lakewood High School. The store front later became a skateboard shop. If I remember correctly, Heinz day job was at NASA. Many of his Sunday riders then formed the Westgate Wheelers bike club. Don't remember Pete G.

On a similar note, anybody remember Jim Chiara, aka Velcro. A big guy, maybe 60 years old, a sprinter that was always breaking bike parts. I was riding in Rocky River Park last Sunday and stopped at the golf course for a drink. He found me, he is now working at the course, seems he messed up his leg bad at work (a few years ago) so no more sprinting.

Mom purchased us many a bike from Heinze(large family).
He brought his hobby from der Fatherland to share with us on the westside and with his former job I doubt he needed the money. You might say he saved us from riding a big box store junk from Uncle Bill,s or Giant Tiger.:thumb:
Gauss Gott Heinz!

Wait, Heinz Linke was the German guy who had tubulars on every bike in the store?
Didn't he always try to push tubies on kids bikes because they could ride them flat or something?

Fleet Bike shop is a great shop. No frills, no fashion, just quick, fast, great service. Al knows his stuff. I've been going to his shop for something or another and he always took good care of my bikes. Very neighborhood friendly. Quick fixes for those breakdowns on the canal trail off of 49th st area. 49th street north to Fleet turn right, across from BP station. Just east of the I77 exit.

Gary, you work at Spin? Fancy that! If you were working today, 5/16 around five o'clock, I was in with my wife. I was the bald guy that asked what was playing on the house speakers, and said my daughter thought The Prodegy were saying "Snap My Picture". :)

I was going to POC scooters on Detroit in Lakewood, so just to get my enthusiasm up to snuff, I stopped at the three shops there nearby. Performance was big and clean but seemed like a shoe store more than an enthusiast shop. Century was like it has always been, crowded, full, and has a wide assortment of stuff, and Spin seemed to have the most "character" and seemed the sort of shop an enthusiast would frequent, just like POC is for scoots. Although all your stuff is way more "high end/fast toys" than I could ever use or need, I can see stopping in again just for the atmosphere.

The one thing I noticed at all three shops is how all the stuff I have/had isn't around anymore. Didn't see Silca pumps, anything Avocet, Brooks, cork tape, I knew Suntour was gone. Also saw lots of brands I didn't recognize. Things sure change in 15 years!

Sorry I missed you,
Steve
