I am newer rider, and just started to enjoy getting out for longer rides. I am working up to commuting (40 +miles RT). I bought a Motobecane Fantom Cross. I have ridden my new Fantom Cross bike less than 11 times. Yesterday climbing the hill back to my house the chain split (pin came out) and the chain-link wedged into the guide of the derailer causing; an abrupt stop to my climb, my derailer hanger to sheer off, and the derailer to become wedged into my spokes.

Unable to bike / train / enjoy summer weather. Chain - shot; Derailer - bent and sheered off at mount; Rim - bent; rider/consumer - angry and dissonant.

I contacted bikesdirect yesterday, with a picture of the chain split around the derailer guide. So far no reply. I will chronicle my experience with Motobecane as we go. Anyone interested in the pictures, and I will post on flikr.

Anyone have suggestions. If you work for a LBS, I have already eaten my share of crow...I thought I would try to help anyone else that is interested in purchasing a new bike make an more educated decision. Perhaps Motobecane will take care of the issue in an equitable / expedient way. If that is the case you will find an accurate account of exactly what transpires.

Is this chain link coming apart a common occurrence? An acquaintance at a LBS said it was likely whomever installed and put on the chain, that did not ensure the final chain link was properly secure.

You can take your dissatisfaction to the BBB (https://odr.bbb.org/odrweb/public/GetStarted.aspx?source=cibr&e=3030691&site=50&id=d11ccf1b-9cab-4373-b0f8-2e8ad14de653). I hope that you can turn this into a positive experience.
