Introductions - Greetings from Victoria, BC, Canada eh!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It'd been almost 2 years since I'd last ridden a bike, my rollerblade wheels are rapidly disappearing, and gas prices are skyrocketing, soooo ... this morning I bought myself a bicycle! :D Here's a pic of my new (to me) toy / transportation:

2003 Rocky Mountain Stratos, specs as seen on this page (http://www.bikes.com/bikes/2003/hardtail/stratos.aspx), except I had the SPDs switched for flat pedals.

I spent nearly 2 hours on it today, and my legs are freakin' tired, but I love it! Sadly, the commute to the new job I'll hopefully be starting next month is about 17km (or 10.56 miles for the metrically challenged) and will probably prove too far to bike, but I'd expect it will be my primary summer transportation for everything else.

Anyway, so Hi folks, glad to find yet another friendly forum for yet another hobby. I swear there's a forum for talking to people who share your interest in damn near anything on the Internet.

Welcome.

Very nice bike.

Everything else being equal (there are no special barriers to biking your route to work) 10.56 miles (17 km for the mileage challenged) should not be a problem.

Why do you think it is too far?

Check out the folks at the commuting forum for sugggestions and advice.

My comute is 27km (mostly flat) but I only do it every other day when the weather is nice. You need to leave yourself plenty of time so you dont strress yourself on the ride and have time to cool down before you start work. I find it nice to go straight to my desk, check the Email, then go and take my shower and change.

I will have to confirm whether or not they have a shower available at the new job I'll be starting. If they do, I could probably do it just fine. Actually, I think it must be a bit more than 17km (which was a figure based on the driving distance on the highway - I'd have to take a different route on a bike), but yeah, as long as there was a shower and a place to stow my uniform, I could bike fairly easily. I'll have to try it sometime before the job starts, and see how long it takes. I'd do it today, but it's absolutely pouring rain :(
