Commuting - 15.0 a bike non-Odyssey (but hey, it was my first commute!)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I DID IT! 15.0 miles door to door. My first commute ever on a bike. Traffic was much easier to handle than I had anticipated. I was thinking that maybe this is a holiday since traffic was so light. ;)

Thanks for all of the tips and encouragement from my other thread(s).

Only 986 more miles to go until I catch Richard D (assuming he doesn't ride any more until I hit 1001 miles!)

Yeeeeeeehaaaaaaw!

<edit>I get of at noon on Fridays, which is why I chose Friday for a test run. It was a breeze getting back home. :) 54 minutes! 16.4 MPH average speed. Can I niavely [sp?] assume that two quick beeps of the car horn means either a) Looking good! or b) just letting you know I'm behind you! ? That's all I heard on the way home. I'm mentally planning for next Wednesday and Friday's commutes already!</edit>

I'll stop and let you catch up when the other commuters on the forum stop and give me a chance to catch up ;)

Well done

Richard

Congrats on the first commute!

Now that you've started, it will get easier all the time, and you're times will come down, making it easier still to keep commuting.

Pretty soon you'll be looking for longer, more scenic routes to give yourself more bike time, those 1001 miles will go by in no time!

So pleased to read about your enjoyable commute! I remember the feeling when I first started--it was as though the world were surprisingly a little better than I thought it was. (Well, the truth of it is that I was probably a little better than I suspected.) ;)

That 986 miles may seem like a lot, but you'll find you're at 1000, then 5000, etc. before you know it.

And I was particularly interested in your reaction to traffic: except for those few roads cyclists are better off avoiding altogether, even rush hour isn't bad. As I've said before, you're only dealing with one or two cars at a time. Stay observant and watch out for the parked cars: they pose the real threat. You might even get to prefer rush hour.... Why not? Cyclists are already crazy, aren't they? :D

That's what I've found, too.

I hope you'll keep us posted. By the way, 16.4 mph is certainly a healthy average speed! I think maybe those two quick taps of the horn meant, "Slow down! I'm losing you." :D
