I am considering getting a partial knee replacement done aka a unicompartmental knee replacement on my left medial knee. Does any one have any feedback about getting back on the bike? Are 100 mile rides still doable? What is the recovery like? Remember it is only a partial and not full. My lateral side still has all the cartilage and meniscus thanks for responding

I am only a med student, but I would think that a recovery program of physical therapy to gradually build up supporting muscle around your knee will be the first step. Ultimately, the deciding factor will be how your knee feels, but I think there is a good chance you eventually will be able to ride at the same level.

Having a really bad knee myself, due to a tibial plateau fracture, 20 years back; I think the largest obstacle will be range of motion....... I'd be asking a lot of questions about that...l

Just went to a seminar on this last night, and one of the speakers did those. Not every orthopod does these, and he said results really vary - but were good enough for him to keep doing them. Finding the right doc is step one, and ask him what he thinks about your case. And then find a different doc to help keep the rest of you from wearing out!

I'm not at all sure what a partial knee replacement is, as opposed to a total knee replacement, but I can tell you that I had a total replacement a few years ago (like five), and I'm riding just fine. I regularly put in 60-70 mile days on weekends, with the occasional century during the summer months.

PM sent. Had one, very satisfied with the result and wish I had done it sooner.

I have had both knees done with MAKOPLASTY(one year apart) and I am very pleased with the results. I had surgery on my last knee (Right) January 28, 2009 and back on the bike six wks later. I was back doing up to 30 miles every other day (weather permitting)with no problems.
