Bicycle Mechanics - Shimano Shifter Replacement Help

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi All,
Have large family but small cash so find it necessary to learn bike repair......
I was given a FUJI 4130 MTB that appears to have low miles but apparently[FONT=Comic Sans MS][COLOR=Navy] owned by someone with little or no repair skills & discarded. The bike overall seems great but the 100GS shifters & cables as well as derailleurs all appear to need adjustment and the crank shifter needs replacement as it is broken with parts missing. Can someone recommend replacement shifters that will fit? I'm a very good mechanic but know little about bikes.
I'm also well acquainted with eBay.
Thanks.
Larry

As far as shifters go is your bike 6 or 7 speed. There are still 7 speed shifter pods made but 6 speed is almost non existent. You would have to go with either what someone has laying around or switch to Grip Shift.

Hi Hunter, thanks for the reply...
I'm guessing it's a 7 speed as there are 7 gears on the rear spindle?

Just an FYI, 4130 is in reference to the Chromoly tubing that the bike was made of, and isn't necessarily the model name.
One route would be to take it to a bikeshop and have them help figure out and track down the necessary replacement parts. You might also want them to give the bike a once-over inspection to locate anything else that may develop problems.
Another route would be to pick up some bicycle repair and maintenance books and do it yourself. The Park Tools website Hunter pointed you to is excellent as well. Many also recommend the Zinn books (search for books by Lennard Zinn on Amazon). I think that Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1884737994/103-3295875-3496658?v=glance) will come in especially useful in your case.
The 100GS component series marked the very bottom of the Shimano MTB component lineup between 1990 and 1992. It was 7-speed indexing and any 7-speed Shimano indexing shifter should work. You may want to look for Shimano Altus or Acera shifters. I believe that 100GS shifters were sold only as integrated units with the brake levers so you'll have to replace those too. Check out these Acera shifter/brake units from Airbomb (http://store.airbomb.com/ba/asp/ic.LD8880/ab/Itemdesc.htm). The other problem is that newer brake levers are designed to work with V-brakes which have a different pull than the 100GS old cantilever brake arms so you might have to replace the brake arms too with V-brake arms such as these Avid brakes (http://store.airbomb.com/ba/asp/ic.BR7090/ab/Itemdesc.htm). Note that you will need two sets. One for the front and another for the rear.

Ok well then you should be able to get 7 speed pods. You can always pick up some non intergrated brake levers seperate from the shifters for the brakes. I do not know if mail order co's even sell cantilever brake levers anymore, but I always reccomend your LBS anyway but I am biased.

Thanks Seeley, the numbers do ring a bell.... somewhere in my ancient grey matter.

Hi khuon,
This appears to be the best route for me... too much research otherwise. I'm just so used to doing everything myself when it comes to mechanical systems... kind of like when we're too stubborn to ask directions. lol I'm sure I can find a cost effective solution from all the help I've found in this group.
Hope you all have a happy & safe Memorial Weekend

Out of curiosity, for a recreational rider, is grip shift a bad thing?
No especially from a cost standpoint. If one of your LBS has some 7 speed Grip Shift laying around it more than likely would be less than rpaidfire pods. However some people like it some do not. For shifters I prefer Grip Shift or thumbies, I do not like rapidfire.
