Finally done!

In March I started getting the itch to buy a new mountain bike. I'm one of those people who has to use something, especially if it's expensive, or I get major buyer's remorse. So I decided I would get a mountain bike different from what I have already, but one that worked with my style of riding. I also decided I'd keep on a budget and not spend too much.

The budget thing didn't work out so hot

I did get a bike completely different than what I have though :D

My current bike is full suspension, geared and aluminum. So I decided to get a fully rigid, single speed, steel frame. A friend of mine is big in to single speeding, and he recommended a bike from a company called Vassago (http://www.vassagocycles.com). He specifically recommended the Jabberwocky. I did some reading, decided I loved it, and started piecing it all out.

I went with the following parts list:

Jabberwocky and ODIS fork (Oh Damn It's Smooth)
XT hubs and Stans Arch Rims (Tubeless)
Truvativ Stylo GXP 1.1 cranks (32t)
Surly cog (19t) - equivalent to 2:1 on a 29er
Avid Juicy 5 brakes with XT rotors
Eggbeater pedals
RaceFace seatpost
Donated azonic stem, Specialized ProTI seatpost, Easton bars

Full build came out to 24.04 lbs.

Fully built yesterday. Rode it in Granite Bay for the maiden voyage:

Nice ride! Looks ideal for Granite Bay. I have an old beat up rigid SS, but nothing close to as nice at that. Someday....

So, you going to race SS Sport now? I haven't seen you at Prairie City. You coming out anytime soon? I need a post-race beer buddy. ;)

The budget thing didn't work out so hot :lol:I can't tell you how many times I've gone for a budget build and ended up with something very, very non-budget. :P

Nice build, looks like fun!

Looks very sweet. I have a 29er single speed that I bought a while back but unfortunately it was too small for me (special order so I couldnt return it) . I have ridden about 300 miles on it and I loved the purity of the experience but was unable to get comfortable. The few times I took it offroad I was amazed by what you could climb but on the whole my local trails are not SS friendly.

It kinda put me off the whole single speed 29er thing but your build looks very nice indeed.

PCRS isn't going to work out for me this year :( My schedule on Wednesdays sucks, and frankly, I'm not in the shape I'd like to be.

Yeah, about that..uhh..Last year I did a ton of road riding because my mtb friends were .. well they weren't riding. This year Joe is committed (as long as he can stay out of the ER) and I have a couple of other friends who want to ride constantly so yeah my road bike is probably mostly relegated to after work rides around the area. I just realized that Joel's century is in a couple of weeks and I haven't been doing any long road rides. In fact, the longest road ride I've done in the past couple months was the Capay Valley cruise. 20 miles single speeding is like 100 miles roadie riding though right? :o
