Any benefit or does it cause more knee pain? Thanks for the info!

there is no evidence that using some degrees of float causes any power loss (as far as i know).

I first use the black look cleats, then I switch to red cleats, after a couple of weeks I switch back to Black Look Cleats, I find the black Look Cleats more to my riding style, as to floats, the balck cleats has lttle or no float at all, as to having knee pain, I have knee pain when I was using the red cleats......

Rode with a guy last Sunday who had a pedal system that actually clamped in from the side. They were prototypes with 0 float. He said the 0 float doesn't bother him but, nevertheless, will be marketing the final version with float.

As long as the cleats are properly mounted on the shoe in a natural position (i.e.- it doesn't wrench your knees in unnatural positions), you'll be fine. Float just gives leeway in cleat mounting so you don't have to be as precise. I've known a few people who just tossed on their black look cleats to the shoes, and 500 miles later needed treatement for their wrecked knees.

From the "good old days" that came before me, in "Greg LeMond's Complete Book of Cycling", before clipless pedals exsisted toeclip pedals with a tab-like-thingy on the rear top side of the pedal, and your cleat engaged that... it offered no float whatsoever. He reccomended riding cleatless for a few miles to mark up on the sole of the shoe where the pedal would contact it, to show you where your foot naturally rested on the pedal. If you had something along the lines of eggbeaters, SPDs, or something else not encased in rounded plastic (Look, for instance), you might want to try that.

When I first switched to clipless the only option was 0 degrees of float. They had just come out and they only came in one flavour.

Now that I have used Look, Sampmson, Look compatible Shimanos, Shimano SPD-R and now Shimano SPD-L, I always end up buying the no float cleats. If they are properly set up they should be neutral on your knees. They clip out faster, IMHO, just feel more secure.

I'm using the black (fixed) Look cleats and I prefer them over my red (float) ones. As Ewitz said, once I have my foot dialed in the way I want it I prefer it to not move around. I'll be getting some speedplay zero's just so I have the potential to restrict all of the float soon.

Dura-Ace PD-7401s with black Look cleats for me. 0° float.

I tried red Look cleats once and the float freaked me out. I need to be locked in.

I also ride float-less on my MTB.
