I want to buy this (http://www.amazon.com/Topeak-Alien-26-Function-Bicycle-Tool/dp/B000FIE4AE/ref=wl_it_dp?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2O9M676FFWBT5&colid=CHV1RSL9NK3P) multi tool.

Do you guys suggest something different no higher then the same price? if so why?

The alien works very well. I could pretty much strip and reassemble a bike with one. Very practical for taking on rides.

I get by real well with; 4,5,& 6mm hex wrenches, a small reversable screwdriver, tire levers, patch kit and 2 cotton balls. I use a chain with a power link, so no chain tool is needed. bk

I had asked a guy at the LBS about a multitool, and he recommended the Alien series of tools.

IMHO Topeak generally makes nice stuff. I've been considering the Alien II myself.

Chain tools on a multitool aren't there for routine maintanance, they are there to remove damaged links caused by something that happened on the road, say running a stick or piece of wire through the chain.

I've never need mine for my bike but I've helped three other riders over the years. I carry the chain tool and a couple of replacement pins or extra master links.

I have the Alien II and I like it a lot. It's great to have on hand in a pinch. I also take along a set of tire levers. But it is somewhat cumbersome ... recommend you have real hand tools when you're wrenching at home.

As HillRider points out, they are NOT for general maintenance - but as a carry-on tool the Topeak Alien II is a very good one. It's what I carry. But it doesn't replace my shop-tools when I'm at home.
