BMX - Bigger dudes riding

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I searched around and couldn't find any info on this:
I was wondering if any bigger dudes road BMX? I am 6ft ~250 lbs and have always wanted to get into bmx, but not to do anything insane, just basic tricks and ****. Is it even possible for a guy my size to be riding these bikes? Any suggestions for bikes that would work for me? I ride a mountains bike now.

For sure, look for something full chromoly, and at least 20.75" top tube.

I'm 6' 220lbs and I ride a 20.5 tt BMX. My hops are weak cause I'm out of shape, so I mostly just cruise around. Definitely get a full cromo bike though.
I just got back into riding and I'm 6'2" 220. I'm riding a 20.75", its not bad but I think move to a 21 at least in a bit. Also, if your taller, I feel bigger bars help, don't have to hunch so much. I've been getting my hops back and can do a little over 1ft and do 180's. Just takes some time, but I'm sure you'll be fine. And yeah, like fuzzy said get full chromo and no ti axles, etc.

I would run them for my front axle on my race bike I suppose. I want to get a Ti spindle for my Profile's too.

Good Stuff, thanks for the input.
Q: I am not all that knowledgeable about bikes, could you guys recommend a bike for me around $300-350? And explain a few things you guys mentioned?

The $350 range is limited. There are some nice bikes in it though, including the DK Helio.
Also with that range check craigslist around your area. That will give you a chance to test ride it and see what size feels good to you.

I was pretty much out of riding for ten years, except for skatepark advocacy and making videos. I went from 125 pounds to 280 pounds. I've been back into riding daily for the last two months and am down to 220 last time I checked. I am only 5'9" though.
Bikes are so crazy much stronger now, and ridiculously lighter, except for the extreme weight weenie stuff. My last bike was 52 pounds and my new one is 27 and takes more abuse. I don't know if you'd be too happy with the 18" or whatever size fly simple frame I have, but I always liked flatland frames even though I ride mostly mini and spines.

I was at a skate/bike park in Allen Texas today and talked to a guy riding a Origin 8 Interrogator. He was dropping into the deep bowls and riding very smooth. Said it easier to manual on the bigger bike. He was about 6 and 200.
He told me to look at the Eastern Traildigger 24 or 26 as a good complete bike on a budget. I am 6 and close to 250

Thanks for all the info guys. A lot more responses that I thought.
I was looking at these:

http://www.danscomp.com/101118.php?cat=BIKES

But I really dont know the difference with them all.
And what size would I need a 24"?

The Cygnus is a nice cruiser. The Havok is their race bike. The Helio is their starter street/trails bike. I would suggest either the Cygnus or Helio.

I see, thank you, I didnt know the difference. I have a lot to learn with this stuff.
What size?
For size I'd probably recommend 20.75". You may be able to do 20.5, but that would be something you'd have to try out at a lbs, if you can.

where was that handy dany sizing chart at?
It would be cool to make an X,Y,Z chart with top tube length vs rider leg length vs how much time you are planning on spending in the air
In my case 19" is way too long for street and miniramps, but 20" is too short for dirt jumps and vert ramps

19" is too long? how tall are you?

19" is too long? how tall are you?
Like I said in the full quote, 19" is too long for me for street and mini, and 20" is too short for dirt and vert
I do lots of combo type tailtap/nosepick/icepick/toothpick/abubacca type stuff, so I like the smallest frame I can get for the most responsiveness. I also like the steepest steer tube I can get and zero or minimal offset forks
When it comes to dirt and vert ramps I like really mellow headtubes and 21" long frames
