Hi all,
I have been considering swapping my surly pacer frame for a casseroll - in order to achieve a higher front end and thereby make the ol back feel better. my reading of the geo charts is that the casseroll will bring me higher than either a LHT or a crosscheck. the only thing that is putting me off was a comment, i think on urbanvelo (firstly in relation to the la cruz, but someone commented that it was an issue on the casseroll too), that some have had heel strike issues on the chain stay. I ride with size 46 shoes, and would be looking at the getting the 55cm frame (since that equates to a 58 or so i gather). anyone had any issues with heel strike, or was that comment off beam? it may have been refering to the smaller sizes. thanks for your assistance!

Heel strike would only be an issue, and then not necessarily so, if you would be using a rear rack and panniers. The Casseroll's chain stays are longer than most road bikes, but shorter than touring bikes, which have longer stays to accommodate panniers and lengthen the wheelbase.

Even if you were using a rear rack on a Casseroll, you could get around the heel strike issue by using a rack-top bag, smaller panniers or a rack designed to provide more setback. Another solution would be to use a large seatbag like a Carradice to carry gear.

The Casseroll has 42.5cm chainstays, which is pretty ordinary for a "sporty" bike. The Pacer has 41-41.5cm stays. So if your Pacer has been fine with a rack, I can't see why the Cassaroll would suddenly give you trouble.

My Giant SCR1 is fine with a rack and panniers, however I sometimes hit the chainstay due to my pedal float, but this is generally from me being lazy!

I run panniers on my casserole when I need more capacity. I have never had heel strike issues.

Once in a while mine hits the stay, but mine's fixed. Never happened on any of my other geared bikes so I think this crank has my foot a little closer than it would be with a double or triple crank.

I have a 55cm Casseroll and wear size 46 shoes. Never had a problem.
