Foo - Car help/electrical/damnit

I need some help. The other day I decided to rip out my old honda 84' radio from my chevy and put in a sony cd player. It ended up being simple enough after getting instruction, the adapter obviously was different between the cars, so with wire nuts i spliced the wires together and put in a new cd player, great.

While i was at it i decided i wanted to look into fixing some other things in the car. It is an electrical nightmare.

The air vent only turns on in the 4th highest blow setting. THe setting to change which fan is on doesn't work it just does the foot setting.

3 of the windows don't go up or down.

I'm not sure what is electrical and what is mechanical, but I was wondering if anyone has experience with this. I was hoping it could just be electrical and need some new fuses lol.

Sounds like you blew a fuse.

How do I find out where the fuses are kept and how to tell if its blown?

on the dashboard, behind the driver's door. I suggest you ditch the car and get a bike.

owners manual should tell you where the fuses are. Also, check your local library, some of them carry repair manuals for common cars. You can either use a continuity tester to check fuses (pull them out and connect probes) or sometimes a visual inspection is possible (the wire/metal will be broken).

Would help to know the year, make and model.

Chevy cavalier 97 4 door.

I found where the fuses are on the left side of the dash. I started pulling out fuses and seeing if that function works. But lots of them are labeled with jibberish so I'm not sure.

The high fan only sounds "like" a blower motor resistor. Generally defaults to high when it goes out.

Need to verify vacuum and actuators for the defrost/heat operation.

The windows, hard to say. May be one of the wires in the pass through at the drivers door jamb is broken. Depends which windows are not functional, I suppose.

Get a volt/ohm meter and a Chilton's manual for your car. Flip it open to the wiring schematics, and have fun. It's not hard, but it can be time consuming.

I had this issue with my '03 ION. The knob was worn inside, so I actually took it apart right down to the bearings and springs inside the knob itself (I had nothing to lose). It was just worn out, so I polished it up, put it back together, and it still works perfectly (I base it on pure luck).

The fan speed problem is the blower motor resistor. Cheap part, easy install.

On the other two, first call your dealer's service dept, and when you get an adviser on the phone, tell him the yr/model, you've got three windows that won't open, and the blend doors are stuck on vent, and what is s/he usually seeing for those problems. Service advisors see pretty much the same problems every day and will know the common issues. Paying for a diagnosis might be worth your time & money also.
