Southern California - Water, Food, Restrooms throughout So Cal mountains

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Here's a place to add graphic maps or google map links to locations where you can find water, food and restrooms along remote riding routes throughout So Cal. Below is a section of the Santa Monica Mountains nearest me in Topanga Canyon. Please feel free to add other known locations.

A. Water spigot to the rear of the guard shack at the top of what's known as 7 minute hill, a fair sized hump along Mulholland. It's located on the south side of Mulholland at the entrance to a gated community. The guard will also fill your bottle up with cold water from the cooler inside.

B. Water and restrooms at King Gillette Ranch State Park on the SE corner of Mulholland and Las Virgenes. Entrance is along Mulholland east of Las Virgenes.

C. Water and restrooms at Malibu Creek State Park campgrounds on the west side of Las Virgenes (which becomes Malibu Canyon Rd south of Mulholland).

D. Water and restrooms at what I think is called Tapia Park, just south of Piuma on the west side of Las Virgenes/Malibu Canyon Rd.

E. Drinking fountain at school bus stop on the corner of Cold Creek Rd and Piuma, near the Saddle Peak Inn.

F. A fresh water stream coming out of the hills along Stunt Rd. It's on the west side (hill) of the road. I've stopped there mid-summer and it still flows. Last time I was there someone built a rock dam to form a pool for easy bottle filling.

G. Approximately 1/2 mile from the top of Stunt Rd is a fountain and spigot along a driveway.

H. Water from a spigot at the gated entrance to the first home on the right as you begin climbing Saddle Peak Rd, corner of Tuna Canyon Rd and Saddle Peak Rd.

I. At the intersection of Fernwood Pacific and Topanga Canyon Blvd is a health food store with food and cold drinks. South of the intersection is the quonset hut shaped Fernwood Market with food and cold drinks.

J. This is the town center of Topanga. Plenty of food and drink options on both sides of the road. Abuelitas restaurant has some very fine Mexican food with patio dining, located at the traffic signal.

K. Topanga Creek Bike Shop is a full service bike shop, where Scott and Chris always have something to eat and drink for traveling cyclists.

There is a spigot on Mulholland Highway/23 going south just before Mulholland Highway splits off. It's on the right in a bunch of landscaping next to the driveway in front of a gate.

Get a Camelbak to supplement your bottle(s), then you are sure to always have water especially during the hotter seasons (adding ice makes it even better). You will probably be better hydrated in doing so.

Good question. There certainly are pockets of homes along the climb, so perhaps a spigot is available. Latigo is often the primary climb on a ride for me, so I usually have plenty of water before beginning, but if it's midway through your ride, then topping up before you begin Latigo is wise. Depending on which way you approach Latigo on PCH, there's a few water stops before Latigo. The Malibu Bluffs park on PCH across from Pepperdine (Malibu Canyon Rd) has a fountain and restrooms. And there's a market or two along PCH if approaching from the west.

AWESOME links and info, KiddSisko. Your map will help me immensely on my Socal rides - I was literally dying of thirst out there on 70+ mile rides, even with 3 bottles with me.

I'd love to hear your opinions/info on good rides in the area - I may start a separate link after I do a search. Thanks

You can get water out of the testcocks on backflow preventers. Some of them have handles but others require a screwdriver.

Care to rephrase that? Sounds kinda risque.

You're welcome! Regarding good rides - well, the whole area is good, isn't it? Piuma to Saddle Peak is a sweet longish (for the Santa Monicas) climb, and Fernwood up to Saddle Peak is moderately challenging. Old Topanga is quite beautiful with lots of shade trees.

They're those one way water valve assemblies on the side of the road that look like this:

Those things sticking out the side are where you connect the hoses for the test equipment to make sure they work. You can open one of them a little and get water. Sometimes they have those little blue handles but it looks like the ones in the picture need a screwdriver.

Even if its hot and you just fill a bottle, you are stealing water so its an emergency measure only.

As you start up Rock Store hill there is a road Sierra Creek that T's off on the right. A short distance down this road is the intersection of Kanan. And at that intersection is a little store with water, bathrooms, and a deli with great turkey breast sandwiches.

I suppose everyone knows about Peter Strauss Ranch at the very bottom of Rock Store Hill, with water and bathrooms.

On the Yerba Buena descent after the Sandsone Peak parking lot there's the Circle X Ranch ranger station on the left with bathroom and water.

And along PCH, atop the hill east of Zuma there's a shopping center with a bike shop, and pizza place that sells single slices.

And, say you're going west on Mulholland, a short way past the Encinal intersection on Mulholland there's a steep driveway with gray stone tiles. A short way up the driveway there's a faucet.
