Just how bad do the roads get on cars during the winter months with salt used to melt off the icy roads? I hear horror stories that just one winter season and a new car without a garage is finished.
My daughter is going to Ithaca this fall. Wondering what to anticipate.

Just wash it once a week at a car wash with undercarriage wash. No garage necessary. With the expense of parking in Ithaca, and good public transportation, the car will probably just sit most of the week anyway.
My daughter goes to school there, her car is rarely driven except to come home or get groceries.

How necessary is it to get a car like a SUV Subaru Forester with all wheel drive?

Ithaca has seen more ice than snow the past few years.
Good snow tires are key. AWD would be ok but if you don't already have it I wouldn't bother. Steep hills in Ithaca. It would be ideal to take pub trans on bad weather days.

+1 on washing the car regularly and having good snow tires. AWD is helpful but not necessary. Just drive slower.
In the northeast they salt like crazy. As long as you wash the car every couple of weeks youll be fine. Snow tires are 100% necessary. You do not need AWD or 4WD but a smal SUV style definately helps over a regular car.
