Commuting - san fran or nyc?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

for general riding - commuting, recreational, and perhaps some group rides here and there - which city is better for cycling? i live in NYC, so i pretty much know what kind of cycling it has to offer (the parks are nice but the streets are freaking dangerous).
i may think about relocating to SF for my job and the quality of bike riding is a big factor in this decision.

Agreed on SF!
Critical Mass has made a difference. San Francisco is probably the safest of all the bay area towns I ride through on my commute/pleasure rides as drivers are simply more AWARE of cyclists. Doesn't mean they are always friendly, just that they have some sense about other road users.
Check out SF Bike Coalition at www.sfbike.org and open the bike map in the resources section to check out the work they have done to open bike routes through the city.
Then on your day off, imagine a quick jaunt over the golden gate bridge and within 40 miles of rolling, curving ranchland your in a little seaside village enjoying fresh oysters and local wine listening to the surf crash.
Or pull out the mtn bike and head 20 minutes to the South, North, or East for excellent single track or a longer trip to the sierra's for epic singletrack. The cycling possibilities are endless and YEAR round!

Admit it, cycling in nyc manhattan traffic makes you feel bad-ass.

New York is bad, but nothing is like Moskva.
NYC would be my first choice, I hate riding around and through flames.

If you want to have money left over from your paycheck to buy more bike stuff, I wouldn't live in either...:)

I love biking in San Fransisco. The city is fun and beautiful. The hills can be a blast( when riding down them). People are generally pretty nice- at least there isn't the New York "You lookin' at ME?" attitude. No snow, and lots of fog. Could anyone ask for more, besides affordability?
Cost of housing is the only reason I relocated to Little Siberia.

New York City is a medium level technical course. I suppose biking in Vietanam (sp) might be worse since no one stops but Manhattan can be nasty. On a Sunday morning, it's a pleasure to ride in Manhattan as the streets are deserted and it's like nothing else in the world.
I bike ride for 16 blocks each day in Manhattan during rush hour traffic (on a Pacific toy store cycle) and going slow feels fine and not nerve racking. I was on a bus and was on pins and needles as the motorist cut the vehicle off constantly. All the near accidents on that bus was incredible. I actually felt safer on the bike.

Cost of housing--you could relocate to one of the small Atlanta satellite towns. We almost never get snow, doesn't rain often and we have temperate winters (and lots of trees.)
As for cycling, I don't have a problem in the 14 or so miles I commute through 4 towns to get to work. Come join me! :)

That is a very nice invitation. The one itsy bitsy bit that I left out was that my wife's family lives fairly close to here. If God came down from Heaven and showed her Paridise as an possible place to relocate, she'd point out several flaws, though the real reason for not moving would be unstated- it's to far from Superior Wisconsin.
One of my brothers lives in Savanah. He realy likes it down there. Some day we'll visit him, and maybe Susie will fall in love with the place. Then I could abandon Snelling's Icebox. In the mean time, I'm not getting rid of the muffs.
