What's the difference? I recently purchased a road bike with the intent to use it in the upcoming duathlon... is that bad? What's the difference?

Plenty of threads on this, search is your friend. However, your road bike will be fine in your duathlon, and will have plenty of other road bikes to keep it company

Tri bikes are ideal. Road bikes work just fine though.
I see plenty of road bikes, even at the Ironman level.

I've got a related question: What is the benefit of having a pure tri bike compared to a road bike with tri bars and a FF seat post? High-end road bikes seem to have similar aerodynamic features (eg shaped seat tubes).

It's all about the geometry. Tri bikes are purpose built for keeping the rider in the most efficient aero position.
