I am planning on doing to Seattle to Portland ride this year, a 204 mile ride, in one day. I currently own, and have been training on a 1970's Atami Samuri 10-speed road bike. I am looking into buying a new bike very soon. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what bike I should buy? I also plan to do more long-distance rides after the STP.

what's your budget like?

honestly from what i've seen on the STP, your 70's bike wouldn't be all that out of place on the ride. as long as it runs well, you can get by on it, even for the one day ride. then again, rewarding your training with a new bike is always sweet!

and how important are (full) fenders? while it may be sunny on the STP day, like it was last year, as you know there are many days in between that are not. and getting a bike that fits full fenders will limit the selection.

soma, surly, and gunnar make (steel) bikes that will fit decent fenders.

if you have a ton of dough to spend, get a custom IF 953 (http://www.ifbikes.com/OurBikes/Road/SSR/)! those things weigh something like 16 lbs when built up.. if you're on more of a budget, i'd look for good used road bikes at recycled cycles (http://www.recycledcycles.com/).
