To be honest I'm not that concerned with brands. I just look for the certification that they've passed the relevant safety tests in this country, then for a proper fit, which is the most important thing.

Whenever I've tried on a Bell helmet they don't feel right. I'm on my third Giro now and they fit me without the need for sizing pads.

It's all about what fits, like Chris and Ruirui say. Same could be said for shoes. Sidis don't fit me right, Carnacs do.

For this reason helmets and shoes should never be purchased mail order unless you are sure of what you are getting.

Giro Monza. Good cross between a reasonable price point and nice looks. Anyone can make a cheap POS helmet that passes certification, the trick is to do it at a reasonable weight with good ventilation. That is why cheap helmets suck, they are heavy and hot.

Bell Arc II, reasonably priced and nice fit. I love the adjusters in the back. Good venting. Basic black in color. Great helmet, I'll get many miles of use out of it i'm sure.

giro eclipse.... in retrospect i shouldve gone with a slightly cheaper bell ... they fit just as well and look just as good.

Ditto re. the fit. Over the past several years, I tried various low-end Bells, and they never felt right on my head. Corresponing/competing Trek helmets always fit better. This year, at our LBS's "mega-sale", the Bell Ukon and Arc II (same helmet, one with a visor, one without) and a coupla corresponding Giros were on sale. They all have the "universal" sizing found on this year's low-end helmets.. For some reason, this time, the Bell fit was just right. So now I ride under the Bell; it's either a Ukon or an Arc II, whichever one has the visor.

There are also some differences with the sizing hardware among the brands. Once again, though, I haven't found one that's inherently superior (well, I have one Louis Garneau helmet that has a little knob you turn to adjust the rear-skull strap, which is cool). I'd say try each brand, play with the rear-skull sizing, play with the strap sizing adjustments, and see which one is easiest for you to manipulate.

I'm more concerned with fit and function as well however, Louis Garneau helmets always fit me like a glove, so I'm stickin with them. I tried on Bell, Giro etc.. and nothing fit better. This is what I currently have...

Louis Garneau; for the only reason that it fit my alien head better than any other brand I tried.

Winter : Silver Protec snowboarding helmet with earmuffs (and a 1/2" thick ninja mask a lot of the time too) It only has a couple of vent holes and is really warm. (sorry couldn't find a link to that one)
