Hey all. Yesterday I did my first sprint triathlon and I absolutely loved it. There will be more in my future. Looking back to my training leading up to it, there's definitely more I wish I could have done, but circumstances with work and my gym limited me a bit. I'll definitely be more prepared next time, now that I know what to expect.

Pretty much everything was worse than I expected except the swim. The bike and run courses were hilly and I hadn't really prepared for that too much. All in all it was right about where I expected to be.

Overall Time: 1:45:47.139

Swim: Probably like most people their first time, the swim was what I dreaded the most. The water temp was around 70-72 degrees so it wasn't too bad, but I used the wetsuit I had rented anyway. Glad I did. It wasn't as bad as I was expecting, but the wake and people made me more uncomfortable than I had expected. As a result I did a bit more breaststroke than I intended as I was more comfortable with that. I still did mostly freestyle. Given that I hadn't swam in 3 weeks leading up to the race, I was happy with my performance here. Swim Time: 0:17:32.442

Bike: The bike was what I was most anticipating. The first 6 miles or so went exactly as I expected. Rolling hills, blah, blah, blah. Then there was THE hill. This one pretty much killed me. After that, I was struggling the rest of the way. The relative rolling hills were now massive hills to me and just plain hurt. I made it, though a little slower than I anticipated, but given the state of me legs, I was just happy to be done with it. Bike Time 0:46:01.517

Run: I hate running. I knew I could gut the run out. No matter how I felt. The first mile and a half was fine. Then came more hills. At about 1.75 miles I had to stop and walk. I had to walk a few more times after making up the hills. I hate hills. Finished the last mile pretty strong (for me) and finished the triathlon. My run time was slower than I'd been doing in training, but really, I just completed my first tri so I wasn't gonna complain about a few minutes. I was beat. Run Time: 0:37:25.990

It was a 600m swim, 11.2 mile bike and a 5k.

I realized afterward that I was probably underprepared for the race. I didn't expect to win or anything, but if I knew before the race what I know now, I would have done a lot more leading up to it. At least now I know what I'm in for.

There's another in race this July that I'm hoping to do. I've got a lot of work to do by then to improve, but after the experience of the first one, I know it's something I'm more than willing to do. (Would have said more than willing to tri, but that would have been overly cheesy. :D)

Congrats on your first race!!!

My suggestion - swim more. It will make the swim better, as well as the bike, cause you won't be so tired when you start riding. I'd say run more - but I hate running, and even though it is my worst event, I have trouble convincing myself to do more of it....

That's pretty much the plan. Unfortunately, my gym closed the pool for some random maintenance a few weeks ago and hasn't reopened it yet. So I didn't get to swim much in the two weeks leading up to the event.

These are my favorite posts. I love reading about other people's experiences. The common bond of suffering. My first race (of the season) is next weekend. I'm very nervous about the swim. I swam all winter, but I'm not sure about the openwater/getting kicked/cold water swim. Oh well. I'll have my report next week.

Let us know how it goes! Also, the swim isn't as bad as you might think. Yeah, you'll probably get kicked a little, and have no idea where you're going most of the time... but other than that, it's actually quite fun!
