Road Cycling - Specialized Sonoma shoes and Shimano PD-R600's?

I just bought a set of Shimano PD-R600 pedals for my '03 Specialized Sequoia Sport and now I'm looking to find shoes that will work with them. The Sonomas claim to work with SPD pedals. Does that mean they'll work with SPD-SL pedals too? I can't seem to find pictures showing the differences between SPD, SPD-R, and SPD-SL cleats. Thanks for any info.

BTW, I'm new here so go easy on me if this is a dumb question :)

Thanks to the picture uploaded by Stevetone (exactly what I was searching for), I can see why. I've heard of adapters to make things work but that they negate the effects of having a recessed mounting point for the cleats.

At least now I can limit my search to SPD-SL shoes. Thanks guys. I'll let you know what I end up with.

I have the Sonoma shoes and they are definitely SPD only. Great shoe though!

well I was presuming he was getting a road shoe... I guess you could go look for touring or mountain shoes that don't have the traditional look-pattern... but I think for most road shoes the LOOK pattern is pretty normal.

I tried on some road cycling shoes today. The two that fit the best were the Carnac Comet ($170) and the Pearl Izumi Vaper ($110). Actually, the Pearl fit a smidgeon better but took more retightening of the straps to get it there (kinda like putting my ski boots on). I have pretty wide feet and a narrow heal and both of these shoes accomodated my foot shape perfectly.

I'm going to another store tomorrow to try on a few more pairs from other manufacturers to see if I can find another choice but in the meantime, does any one have experience with other shoes that they think will fit my feet? Both Diadora and Sidi didn't even come close to fitting (too narrow up front, too wide in the back). Thanks.

Try looking at Time and Northwave shoes as well...

Thanks for the advice everyone. I ended up buying the Carnac Comet(e) and after two rides I could not be happier. My second test fit between the Carnac's and Pearl's resulted in my feeling that the Carnac's fit better. The straps seem to be very high quality and allow for me to really get them snug on my feet. The only issue I had with them was a cramp in my left foot but that was from me not adjusting my cleats perfectly. My second ride was pain free (in my feet at least). I feel much faster being able to pull up on the pedals and my speedometer is showing it too (0.5 mph avg. speed improvement). I'm also working on spinning more after reading through many threads on this forum so I can't say it's all due to the pedals but they sure seem to help. No falls yet either!
