Any ideas on how to adjust and test my gears and drivetrain if I don't have a workstand ?

if you have a garage or shed, hang bungee cords around the rafters and suspend frame from them

My workstand doubles as a tailgate... just flip the bike upside down and viola!! gets the job done usually..

I've done it more times with the bike upside down than I've ever done on a workstand. Works just fine, if a bit unsteady. I've also hung the bike from the saddle nose on a tree limb for a trailside repair. At home I don't have a proper workstand but I put a fold-down bike hanger in the backyard on one of the patio posts and that works just fine. Not as nice as a proper workstand but it gets the job done.

I have a trunk mount bike carrier. Think that would work ?

depends on if the contact points between the carrier and the bike touch the cables...

I use a fold out step ladder and the hang the bike between the A frame, use a broom handle or short pole to hold the seat.
