What a year it’s been! A year ago tomorrow (4/27/08) I got on the scale for the first time in many years and was jolted to see a number that I didn’t expect. 205 pounds. Wow. I’d gotten heavy. My waist was up to 40 inches too. Not good for someone only 5’7”. In addition, I’d been suffering from sleep apnia and snoring. When I saw that number I decided to do something about it.

This wasn’t just one of those off-the-cuff type decisions. This was a deep down to the core type of decision. I immediately started to calculate the calories that I was eating. I dusted off my bike and took it out for a ride. It wasn’t much of a ride at 9.9 miles with an avg speed of 13.8 mph. But it exhausted me.

I cut back on the amount of food I was eating. I increased the amount of veggies and decreased the amount of meat. Stopped the nightly ice cream. Stopped the nightly nightcap. And started riding more. In May I got out for 10 rides and covered 207 miles. My average speed came up too. My weight started to drop as well. I cut back to 1750 calories a day.

Six months later I was down to 167 pounds and rode nearly 500 miles in October. I even completed a century. That’s quite a change in just six months!

Skip to today. 81 miles, near on 6000 feet of climbing. I’ve been averaging over 500 miles a month since January. Over that year I covered 5642 miles. My weight has been stable since the end of December at 144, give or take a pound. My waist measures 28 1/4 inches. The sleep apnia is gone. The snoring is gone.

It’s been a long journey (ok, maybe not that long compared to others), but I am still careful about what I eat and I really enjoy riding. I’m hoping to do over 6000 miles in calendar year 2009. And I expect to get in some more centuries as well. I really want to improve as a climber.

Unfortunately, I’ve lost my favorite excuse. I’m no longer a new rider.

Being healthy is its own excuse. Five years ago I had a pair of immobilizing surgeries and quit smoking, going up, like you, to 205 at 5'7". I started hitting the gym soon after and went down to 185 or so, where I stayed for a few years -- until I broke my wrist last March, started doing ridiculous amounts of cardio, and took up biking longer distances. Now I'm down to 150, my wife says she can sleep through the night because I'm not snoring as badly, and I actually feel physically spry and mobile for the first time in years.

What I'm trying to say is that I understand the magnitude of your achievement. Going from a 40-inch waist to a 28 is no joke. Keep it up.

Nice job. Feels great, doesn't it? This is part of your lifestyle. Keep it up.
I too, ate/drank way too much without any exercise. Made a decision in '05 to get serious about it. I don't think I will ever go back to those ways again. Total weight loss for me: 50+ and counting.

Nicely done,

BR

Congrats, Joel. The long-term commitment is itself quite impressive as well.

Just curious, what's your daily intake in calories now?

Congrats on coming a long way, baby! Twice that for making the internal shift; that's the one that sticks.

See you on the road!

Thanks folks :D

Around 2500 give or take a few hundred. If I notice on the scale an extra couple of pounds, I cut back and get rid of it.

Joel, you get the Atta-Boy award for perseverance. Being overweight is a choice people make. Doing something about it is also a choice, and you made the decision to do something about it. No telling where you might have ended up, but it could have been on your back with a cardiac surgeon looking down at you. Job well done. Just for fun, go put a 60lb backpack on and carry it around for a while. You will appreciate the magnitude of what you accomplished. Live long and ride hard.

I lost 75 lbs coming out of high school and it changed my life. I remember exactly how you're feeling, and I'm totally happy for you. The best part is that after tackling that much weight, you know you're capable of just about anything!

Congrats!

Here's an "after" pic. I don't have any before pics. I now regret not taking one.

don't worry. low carb beer.

may I ask if you've also changed your eating habits? I mean biking is a great but you can't lose weight without eating right, which is what I'm struggling with.

I sure did. I cut back on proteins, increased veggies, and reduced total calories. I also stopped drinking soda and switched to water. There are a lot of calories in soda, and a lot of crap in diet sodas. Better to drop them altogether.

I counted calories right at the start for a week or two, just to get an idea of what I was eating and what I should be eating. As well as to get an idea of what a proper portion is. That was a very big help, and rather eye opening.

Good job Joel! :thumb:

I discovevered cycling after being diagnosed with diabetes. I got back in shape and lost about 45 pounds in the process. I don't know what I'd do without my bikes. :)

This is the best I can do for a "before" pic. I believe this was august of last year.
