I'm preparing for a likely move from GA to Mass. and wonder whether the "nice" winter shoes are worth it (Lake, Sidi, etc.) or should I just upgrade to some better shoe covers? Any thoughts appreciated.

Depends on how cold you want to ride.
Booties get me down to around freezing. My Lakes are still toasty in the single-digits.

Lakes in Mass. it gets chilly a lot in winter. far less hassle with lakes than shoe covers or that sorta extra garbage on normal shoes.

It's a highly subjective question. For me, the full booties and the long ski socks keep me warm into the single digits (maybe below that, haven't tried it yet).
