I am wondering if it's possible to charge a 24v sla battery using a charger plugged into a car dc to ac inverter or plugged into an inverter plugged into a portable dc power pack.

Both of the charging methods you describe are possible, and both of them are inefficient. Carrying one battery to charge another battery is almost never a good idea because a lot of energy is lost in the charge/discharge process and you could probably buy more SLA-battery capacity instead.

There was a reason for my question. I got the impression that a battery should be charged soon after use, and therefore if I was on a ride away from home I could start charging the battery thru an inverter till I got to a regular power source.
