Great Lakes - OT: Swine Flu in Lorain County

There has been one confirmed case of swine flu in Lorain county, a 9 yr old who travelled to Mexico and visited a farm.

The school he attends (Ely School) has been closed for the week as a precaution.

Here is a list of symptoms and precautions from the CDC. This feels pretty serious, especially so close to home.

It seems that nearly all of the US cases have been pretty mild so far--hopefully it won't be as bad as some fear.

Seems the boy is apparently Mexican and was in Mexico last week visiting family and he brought home to the residents of Ohio a little gift.

If you don't have medecine (or at least modern medecine) you can die of a cut. Especially in Mexico. Why hasn't anyone died in the USA yet?

It's a double-edged sword. One the one hand, yes, this whole thing will be over-hyped by the media, it's what they do - but on the other hand, better safe than sorry.

Possibly because the Media has been very vigilant in keeping the issue on the top of the news. People who normally would not go to the doctor for flu symptoms are now getting checked out. Would you rather they ignore a potentially deadly flu?

If you criticised Woodrow Wilson or the government,s handling of the epidemic you could receive 15 years as one congressman found out.It was not allowed to report to the situation as an epidemic.
On a side note:
My great uncle died at the Army base in Oklahoma in 1918 of influensa.The science at the time believed burning waste at the camp infected peoples lungs causing the epidemic.
What even became of the autopsies of the 1918 flu victims they dug up in Antarctica a few years back?I guess no cure came of this.

And it's not big news in Mexico? If anyone forgot about this in Mexico, they'd remember real quick when they saw everyone in a mask.
Don't get me wrong Gary, this is serious: in Mexico. If this originated in the USA, we wouldn't be having this discussion. The most that would come from it would be the usual "it's flu season again. get your shots'n'sh*t".
This is exactly like SARS and the bird flu, in that it is a slightly more dangerous version of an already common virus.
