Commuting - Are you a Fred/Roadie hybrid?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm a Fred when I'm on my flat bar comfort bike. It's a Fred bike with all the Fred stuff like racks, panniers, multiple lights, reflective tape, fenders and upright seat position. I might pass a Roadie-wanna-be a few times a month, but I'm still a Fred.
But on my road bike, I'm a Fred/Roadie hybrid. I'm staying on my drops and managing some fast average speeds over longer distances. Faster than most, since I'm rarely passed and I can keep groups in sight for a couple miles. The bike is not a true Roadie rig, however. It's a steel framed Cyclocross bike with a rear fender, lights, 700cX28 tires and a pump bag installed within the main triangle. I wear bike pants and vests, but I refuse to wear logos. The idea of a competitive group ride lacks appeal, too.
So, I'm not a Roadie at this point. Does that automatically make me a Fred?

hmmm...
Though I do ride a road bike most of the year, I use power grips instead of clipless pedals. I wear bike shorts but I don't have a jersey. For shifters I currently have one old, dinged up 105 and a newer Sora.
I'm not sure either group would be willing to claim me.

I defy classifications.
Definitely not a roadie, sort of a fred. I ride a mountain bike with aero bars and a large plastic bin (instead of a milk crate, because it's waterproof) attached to the back.

I've got one non-Fred bike ('79 Raleigh Professional), but don't ride with groups, as I'm fat and slow (relatively), and don't pay attention to speed or cadence. It is fun to pass cars in a 30 mph zone though. Of all my other bikes, one other is a drop bar bike, but that is outfitted with stem shifters and fenders, another is an upright, north roads barred, Wald basketed commuter, and the other two are "english" three speeds that have been even further fredified.
I'm a rather Freddish roadie, but not sure roadie really fits me anymore (or ever?) since I stopped caring about my glycogen window. I ride an MTB to work and take out my 20-year-old road bike on weekends. I typically ride alone, but am starting to do more group rides. I'd like to work up to longer distances. My whole life of bicycling and I still haven't done that first century.
I'm probably the fat guy in lycra that some of you freds make fun of and call a "poser." My jersey is yellow because it's visible, and it was cheap at bikenashbar.com. I don't really give a crap what I look like because it works. I commute in regular-looking clothes, though, so as not to frighten bystanders in the cafeteria with my imposing manhood. (That was a joke.)
Riding is my passion and I will never stop.

I am a roadie at heart. I have 5 bikes that I use for commuting on and off. One of them is a road bike.
So I am a Roadie/Fred hybrid, but I do not fit neatly into your poll choices. I never get geeked out and ride with Roadies anymore. I still PASS an awful log of geeked out roadies tho, even on my Fred bikes.

I'm more of a Fred - I commute to work with Kitty litter buckets on the side for change of cloths and other things. I've been riding a road bike to train for the BRAN...but I'm more of a Fred than a roadie, as I haven't ever joined a group ride, not really planning to either since it doesn't fit my time schedule.

100% Fred here. 0.0000000% of my riding is for anything other than getting myself from here to there. I own one bike, a flat bar hybrid with full racks, lights, fenders and a Brooks sprung saddle.

I ride a road bike with a full face helmet and a bright yellow top with 2 blinkies and a torch up front. I try to ride fast but don't always succeed so I guess I am a bit of a hybrid but erring more to the fred side. Although I do plan to upgrade my clothing to shorts/tights and jerseys so what would I be then?

steel = my surly
carbon, aluminum, and ti are all on my race bike (Cannondale CAAD9 with weight-weenie components!)
None of the above. I just ride bikes a lot, that's really all there is to it.

I'm actually an over fifty Clydesdale commuter who rides his vintage bike to talk to his bike mechanic and frame builder when his Cyclocross bike is not in use as a long distance ride. :innocent:

missed one other option.
Commuter that rides weekends to train for commuting.

I am a complete, unadulterated Fred:D
Here's why:
1. I always ride in roadie clothes (yep, the works, though NEVER in anything that remotely resembles 'team colours' [yeech]) BUT I pollute same by always using MTB shoes/SPD and riding with a backpack (wait, it get's worse!)
2. I commute during the week (and often on weekends), and do distance rides (when I can) on weekends, BUT
3. All this is done on my one/only bike: an mtb (hardtail) heavily modified/weight-weenied for road riding.
Forgive me purists, for I have sinned.

I think the "Fred" moniker is being diluted by this discussion.
IMHO many of you calling yourselves "Freds" are way too high-tech for the label.

I started as a kid which is just a kid biker, then older became an adult who used to ride as a kid. Then I stopped and got fat. Then I got into fitness and safety with the kids so I became a Fred. Without the kids I can't use my flag or people will laugh, so I'm a hybrid commuter with a roadie trying to breakout.

I guess I'm more of a Fred when I'm on my comfort bike. But I keep it gangsta and ride through red lights and stop signs. I don't wear a helmet but I do have head and tail lights.

you've got to get control of yourself and ride responsibly because if you get hurt you want to be able to look back and not regret some action that may have led to or didn't prevent an injury

Once a label is applied to a person, they are no longer a person, they become the label. So I'm not going to label myself.
