Commuting - Back after an accident

I've been out of commuting commission for a month due to a run in with a Ford Excursion. My road bike was totaled in the accident, so I rode my mountain bike today. I was expecting my 14 mile trip to take longer since I haven't ridden in a month and because I'm going from a road bike to a MTB, but it really didn't take any more time than before the accident! Hopefully it won't take me too long to work up to a full week of riding (140 miles, I was almost to that level when I was hit).

Oh, and hopefully I don't get hit again. That sucks.

I recently built up my old mtb with slicker tires and townie bars for commuting and I found the same to be true. The time difference between my roadie and mtb was negligible on my 5-10 mile commutes, and the mtb's tires soaked up a lot more road buzz.

Watch out for those Excursions.

I found it weird this year getting back into the swing after going all winter with out riding, it only took a few days.

Did you get a pay out for your damages?

It was determined that the driver was 85% at fault, so I got a decent amount for my old bike, and will have most of my medical covered. At first his insurance adjuster claimed I was 40% responsible, but I was able to negotiate down to 15% (it was NOT an illegal U-turn that the driver made). BTW, since I didn't have an insurance company representing me, I contacted my auto insurance company to get the inside scoop. They told me what I should accept as fair and how the process works. They were very helpful.
