Commuting - Buying Clipless Pedals for first time

Hey guys! I'm looking to buy a Shimano SPD clipless pedal (and shoes of course)... they run around 80 bucks or something... but I've never bought such a thing before and the online websites don't seem to specify whether this is for ONE PEDAL or TWO PEDALS. I'm looking to buying the SPD 520 or 530... so... YEAH... please help me. Is it gonna cost me like 80 bucks or 160 bucks for 2 pedals?

Price is for a pair of pdeals and the cleats. Everything you need but the shoes. I really liked the M520s as starter pedals. They are well made, easy in/out and, being double sided, you didn't need to worry about what side of the pedal was facing up. Unfortunately, my wife stole mine and won't give them back but I've got too many other pairs of clipless pedals to warrant buying more.....yet.

I was in the same boat as you. I ordered some Shimano M520s from Performancebike yesterday and I wasn't sure until I opened the box today if there was going to be one pedal or two! :lol:

I'm not trying to confuse you or anything but before you drop some money on the SPD's you may also want to consider Crank Brothers Candy C pedals. Those are my first clipless pedals and I will have to say that the learning process was so much easier with those. No tension to adjust, plenty of float and very easy to get in and out of.

SPD's are very nice too. Either one should make you happy. Good luck.

It is worth paying lots to get good fitting shoes with stiff soles. You wont notice much difference between cheap and expensive SPD pedals.

My Candy C's only cost me $60 on sale. They normally run for $89 but are $65 right now at Performance.
BTW, it is wort it to buy good fitting shoes with stiff soles. If you spend enough time on the bike it pays to be comfortable.

Make sure you put the correct pedal on the correct side. They are not interchangeable (a hint you could have used to conclude that it's for the pair).

if you go SPD (what I did), i strongly recommend starting with the multi-release cleats. I think the model is sh-sm56. They let you unclick by basically yanking hard enough in any direction. definitely saved me from a few falls, and I've never had them unclip unintentionally.
