My Florida based HMO won't cover me on a trip to Europe

While reasonably healthy and careful, things do happen, and I'd like to know how others have handled a similar situation

I can arrange for transportation back to the USA if something serious should occur, but it doesn't include local treament for minor probs

Check with a local independent insurance agent. There are policies available. My daughter as a teenager went to Europe and we were able to get her a policy to cover her. If I remember the policy ran around $200 and that was for 3 months. I am sure that the costs have gone up since then. This was 10 years ago. Make sure the agent you talk with handles health and life insurance. There were some restrictions. I think minor things were not covered and had to be taken care by us but at least all the biggies were covered.

I wonder if insurance can be purchased in Europe.? Our California HMO would reimburse us, should we had no problem .
Because, we did...My wife feel off of a horse in the Valle de Ruin valley in the Pyreenes of Spain.
She had two breaks in her left arm...we went to a local hospital. they took us right in the ER w/o asking insurance questions...
We had a doctor's visit..5 xrays..ER charges. Put on a cast..Luckily a clean break. 3 follow up therapy sessions.
All three doctors' visits cost us almost $70...We did not report it to our HMO..Less than the deductble for the new year.
Service was excellant...No wait at ER...
Two follow up therapy sessions later at Toulouse, France. We sat about a hotel in central Toulouse for one week....That is the year I saw the Tour De France pass through Toulouse. One week while Gina recovered...Gaul, WIsh I had taken my bike along. Recovering at a hotel in Toulouse. Not on that years travel docket.
With charges being more reasonable in Spain..Suspect you could save a lot of money by purchasing medical insurance there.

I purchased insurance for my first bike trip in Europe (6 months) - not knowing how bike friendly Europe is. It was a waste of money. I suggest not buying any.

Bike friendly has nothing to do with paying many thousands of dollars for medical care in case of serious accident. Buy the insurance.

I'd try to find a way to NOT buy medical insurance from an American company..They will rip you off.. Medical costs are much more reasonable in Europe.. We should know, we had to pay them out of pocket..
What services we got over there, would cost us about 50 times as much in the U.S...
