Road Cycling - Love my Trek 7700FX for Training - Need a Road Bike, though!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have been riding a combination of trails and roads in Western Pennsylvania for about 15 years now (taking time out for meals/sleeping/work and such!). I purchased a Trek 7700FX last March to celebrate 1 year after an achilles tendon double tear. The 7700FX is a wonderful bicycle by my standards. I have enjoyed it to the tune of about 3000 miles over the past year and a third. My only complaint is the bail-out gear seems to work sometimes, and other times it won't shift past 2nd gear. That is VERY seldom a problem because I almost never use the tiny front wheel on the triple crank. I used it last year once after riding about 95 miles one day and coming to a big hill completely bonked.

Now I need a road bike. WHY? The trek 7700FX is awesome for training, but I can't keep up with my road bike buddies, and it ain't because I'm weak or not trying! So I found a Trek 2100 1999 model on ebay for a cheap price (about 600 bucks). It looks ok. I am used to SHimano Deore XT componentry. The 2100 has Shimano RSX comonentry with a 105 rear derailleur. Is this a good idea? Should I get this bike and switchout the derailleurs for Ultegra? Does it REALLY matter? Or should I wait? Hmmmm//......

No the components mentioned are good enough for now.

Thanks for your time. I'm riding about 100 miles per week, except for more on MS150 weekends this summer. I think this 7700FX is awesome. I've always wondered how the 105/Tiagra/Ultegra groups compare with the Deore/LX/XT road bike counterparts. I guess I'll find out soon enough!
