There is a petition going around to get a NC radio DJ fired. He said something about one of the american idol contestants being "ghetto" fo having a child out of wedlock. The petiton is a big racial thing. I dont know how I feel about all that but i do know how I fel about this:

"Dumas and then co-host Madison Lane were taken off the air last fall after Dumas encouraged listeners to run bicyclists off the road. Dumas laughed at listeners' stories of abusing cyclists and even said he sometimes throws YooHoo bottles at them."

this is our chance to get an idiot like this off the air and make sure he doesnt spread any more of his stupid ideas. I dont think it would be funny to get hit with a glass bottle while riding.

heres an article about his comments about cyclists:
http://www.heraldsun.com/archives/URNDetail.cfm?URN=0433771372

like I said the petiton is about some racial remarks but any chance to silence some idiot who advocates assualting cyclists is ok by me

Oh no, not another rant on shock jocks....

Action like this is what they live for....these are the same tools that would moon the teacher in 5th grade...they jsut do this crap because it's the only way for them to get any kind of spotlight attention.

Best thing you can do is ignore them...once they get slapped with another fine, another newspaper article will come up, which makes more folks want to listen....why? Because some folks like to hear these clowns, and they just heard of one bad enough to get wrote up. Let them die into obscurity...I doubt they will ever get blackballed....even Madcow is still in media, even after his indescribably offensive halloween bash stunt some years back...which was well beyond anything that could have been said...these tools were just talking smack...madcow's was an action...I really don't feel like explaining something so outright disgusting, but I bet you can find it on yahoo easily enough.

More to the point, would getting them sacked really change anything? For one thing, these clowns can probably look forward to a nice severance payment which will more than comfortably tide them over until they get another gig. For another, who will they get to replace these clowns? More of the same would be my guess.

Exactly my point....it's called senstionalism...you do something that sparks emotion to bring you ratings and/or profits....it's been around for centuries.

This is just one of the more brutally obvious forms of it...and senstaionaism only works if the people take action on it...otherwise it's jsut a fool blowing his horn.

So, are you saying we should ignore it if someone sets up KKK Radio in Harlem? Or if a coffee shop opened in Greenwich Village called "Jew ****** Cafe"? As far as I'm concerned, free speech is over-rated. I don't know why Americans put up with this sort of thing. There are now more Nazis in America than in Germany and this "freedom" to spit hate is why.

Not at all. If you read my post, you would see that I didn't once mention free speech anywhere. I was merely talking of practical, realistic approaches to getting rid of this crap -- and bombarding the station with complaints will not do it.

How do you pronounce Dumas :)

I agree with Chris L. That clown might be relieved of his job and he will just go somewhere else. And he might be replaced with another clown. But we can't just ignore it and hope it goes away.

A better question than "How do we get this assclown off the air ?" is "Why do we voluntarily subject ourselves to his ravings ?".

You wouldn't invite this jerk into your home or on one of your training rides, right. When you listen to him, you are doing exactly that. I gave up on commercial radio a year or two back. I am much happier and (arguably) more sane because of it. These days I listen to Internet broadcasters (www.wmvyradio.com, www.thebasement.com.au, and www.wfuv.org), I listen to alot of CDs. I have run about halfway through the local library's audio collection.

I still catch a little commercial broadcast radio, when others listen, or in public places. I have also discovered that quiet is very underrated.

This experience with radio has caused me to think very hard about tossing the TV out the window as well. I probably will at some point.

Right; if he gets fired because a bunch of listeners make a stink, he could use it as a "badge of courage". Who knows, some other station might be bent enough (and bent on ratings enough) to consider it an asset. But if he gets fired because his ratings go down...

You missed the point...they are NOT doing it because they beleive in anyhting, they are doing it just to get people pissed off at them. See when people are happy, they usually don't talk much..but when they are angry...oh boy does word spread! So...if you wnat to get your show out and get some people to hear those sponsor ads...say something as abrasive as you can so you get more listners....even if htey are only there to jump down your throat the second you say something wrong...and in turn that makes for more listeners.

Basically it's the howard stern method for media success....cause an uproar and they will come.

How you end that is you don't make an uproar...jsut quietly make an FCC petition, don't talk to the station, don't post it on the boards, just file and let it die. The quieter the backlash, the less sensation it is, and less folks will want to tune in as opposed to making a huge scene about it.

Unless you get mad about something and do something about it, you're just taking up space.

I think the proper way to get their attention is to note every advertiser aired during these nitwits' shows, then write to each advertiser, copying local and national bike associations, shops, fundraising organizations that host rides, newspapers, etc . Explain that not only is what they suggest illegal, but it can get people killed. Explain that their product is being associated with these a$$holes, and that you would never consider using their product or service, and are actively suggesting to all other cyclists to also boycott their products until the station removes these fools.

Is this thread about the same folks as this: http://bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=54529

again..telling everyone + dog only does what the DJ intended to do with their words...in other words they won.

This thread is again, them winning, because it's word of mouth has spread.

I do think that talking to the station itself (NOT through the form of the show in question), and the sponsors is a good idea Yak. BUT...getting it in the papers, shops, natl associations is only going to spread word of mouth farther....basically what was meant as a desire to improve things now has become merely a form of advertisement for the very show you are rallying against.

Basically, do something about it...but starting a crusade against a program that intends for that very thing is only going to ensure that the show remains, but with different guys that may be worse for all we know.

They are not doing live broadcasts at the present time. This is a real shame. They are an outstanding radio station and I hope they resume broadcasting via the Internet again real soon.

How so? They issued an "apology". Big Deal. It won't mean squat if they do the same thing again next week. Even if they actually fired the guy, what's the point if they replaced him with another "shock jock"?

I don't believe free speech is overrated. As an American that sometimes criticises the actions of politicians and bureaucrats, I hold my right of free speech dearly. After all, the politicians and bureaucrats would first silence their critics.

Since the airwaves are considered public property in the United States, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) can limit what is said on radio and television without infringing on the right of free speech to "preserve the overall good. (my quotation marks)" Most often this ability has been used to censor sexual content, God and politicians protect us from explicit sexual language and images, but the same feel content to let idiots blather hate and lunacy on a daily basis.

The best censorship and ultimate tool that misuse the airwaves is located right on the receiver; it's call the on-off switch.
