Great Lakes - RAIN Update

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So it's 10-11 weeks away. Who's in for sure? Who's a maybe? Who's lined up lodging and looking to split expenses by room-sharing? These are important details before I commit myself (I know many of you think I should have been committed long ago:rolleyes:). Any vanpooling? carpooling being considered?

I'm in. I have a minivan with a bicycle hitch for 4 bikes and so does Psi. Last year we rode down with Psi.

Hmmm ... I'm thinking I'm likely.
I'm in for sure. I like collecting the keychains. Forecast looks like scattered showers and rainbows if you believe the jersey, and the jersey's never been wrong. I'd offer to split a hotel and carpool, but my family is SAG'ing again so we're already full. I think they enjoy Texas Roadhouse the night before, and Olive Garden right after more than leapfrogging me all day.

i've never done this ride, nor even considered it due to the logistics...psi, do you have room for me this year?

I'm riding RAIN this year. Don't need lodging since my parent's live reasonably near the start. My brother is coming from AZ to ride this year!
I think my husband is sagging for my brother....My mom will be on babysitting duty with the kids which leaves me on my own across Indiana.
Just pack up my baked potatoes and go! :D

I'm in...now that I know Scummer is in, and can pull me in the last 30-40+ miles (or was it a lot more than that?). I'm putting in a bid to ride down with Psi (or Scummer, if you end up driving too). I'm also up for splitting the cost of a hotel if anyone's interested. And I don't even snore unless I've had too many beers.:D
May have to change my signature to "Riders on the Storm" if we have a repeat of last year's start.

I don't know what my formal plans are yet. I have done this the last 4 years in a row and am kind of feeling the "been there, done that" feeling about it.....but....I DO love doing it.
I will say I am tentative as of now. I have the van. Julie will most likely be available. If needed we can stay at my parents place in Indy.....
We've got some time to figure it all out.
As of now let's assume I have room - Scummer, Volde, Niets, aham have dibbs so far.....;)

Not even if I add the gooey marshmallow stuff????
I call second behind Scummer. Get us a Rain Train.
And maybe I'll have Julie for sag (which I really don't need but a good excuse to stop and see Lil Psi if he's along).
By the way, I can't believe it's only 10-11 weeks away!

I so wish I was able to do RAIN again this year. I did it last year for the first time and had such a wonderful day. Unfortunately I moved from Indiana to Charleston,SC this year. I decided with a friend to do RAGBRAI instead.
Take care and enjoy the ride.

I'm picturing riding 100-110 miles or so, and then picking a warm, mushy, sticky, white and orange blob out of a jersey pocket...now where's that smilie for "puking"?:p

I'm definitely, seriously considering possibly riding RAIN this year but I haven't made up my mind yet ;)
I plan to do this ride again this year. I have room for one other rider if interested. I would also like to share a room, however one that is a step up from last year :)
Do the "outta towners" get to chime in? Coming in again this year, along with a friend (& forum member) from Concord, NC, my wife & daughters to SAG & cheer, and also hook up with a friend who recently moved back to IN from nearby. Think my brother in law is coming down again to ride with some of his work buds from Chi. (they were the ones who had the charter bus in '07 at the start for those who might remember). Doing the Drury since I have a big crew in tow. Hope training and riding the mountains here get me ready for the ride. Can't wait!

Everything is a step up from where we stayed last year, but the price was right, and I think the roaches enjoyed the company.

If you don't have anyone to ride with, keep following this thread. We have a fairly wide range of rider abilities coming from NW and west 'burbs of Chicago, and anyone's pace will ultimately be determined by how much training time they get in from now until then. But there might be some people you could ride with.

Having ridden with momof4greatkids on last year's RAIN as well as this year's TOSRV I think she'll be able to pick and choose who to ride with from a wide range of rider abilities. You're always welcome in our group if you don't mind waiting several hours for the rest of us to finish.

Well darn. If aham23 and psi are not coming then I guess I have to break the sub 8.
we talking ride time or total time? some of us have broken the sub 8 ride time barrier. anyway, you did nail it, if i go sub 8 total time has to be the challange and it would take some help. later.

My total time was 8:36 two years ago on a perfect weather day. The year it topped out at 105* my total time was 10:30 ish.
Ride time is meaningless to me....It's all about total time for me in an endurance event like RAIN. I mean, anyone can ride faster times if they stop and rest for a half hour. The challenge is to train to NOT need the rest and still be able to maintain a good, consistent pace. But, hey, that's just me!

Total time!
I just did a 4:46 total time in 101 miler yesterday. Two stops at 50 and 80 miles for water.
I think I can do it with a good paceline.

I can offer a rack for 4 bikes and a 7 seated minivan. BUT, no support on the route. Meaning, you gotta take the bus back to the starting city, which I'm planning on doing anyway if Starship Psimet with his wonderful wife can't make it.
