I did my first fifty miler of the warm season yesterday from Alyeska lodge to Anchorage with some sight seeing along the way. I stopped at the Costco en route to home to pick up some items and a man came up to me while I was waiting in line.
"Excuse me, did you just come up the highway?"
"Yeah."
"I saw you there, and you're huge!"
He was astonished when I told him how far I had come. I just thought I'd share that with the fellow huge riders.

Uhm I guess he had good intentions, saying you are huge, meaning great accomplishment for a guy your size. The way he said it though could make you want to punch him.

I had kind of a similar experience last fall. I'm pretty used to being called "fat" so when I rode by some kids in a playground I heard one girl yell what I first heard as "You're Fat!" Then it dawned on me that she ACTUALLY said "You're Fast!" Made me feel good and also made me realize the leftover emotional trauma I suffered as being the "fat kid" in school since that's the first place my mind goes even though I'm not "fat" anymore. :)

I have a friend who's wife, when she opens her mouth, you never really know what will come out. I know that she is for the most part well-intentioned, but sometimes the delivery just feels brutal.
"Your Huge"....Yeah, well, you are stupid. At least I can lose weight.:notamused:
I live in a redneck area, and I hear "Hey there Big'un" from time to time. I usually just let it go (and imagine in my head, me thumping them between the eyes). If it weren't for my imaginary world, I would explode.:twitchy:

I should have said "Yeah, but my ass is a rock.. go ahead and touch it.. go on!"
I also got a kick out of one of the thin spandex fair weather crowd who asked "you doing OK buddy?"

I made a joke the other day about a kid's event here during the Apple Blossom Festival. It went something along the lines of, "I couldn't run the kid's course, much less the adult one!"
What I found amusing is that a year ago that would have been the end of the conversation, but someone nearby piped up and retorted, "You ride over 15 miles every day, regardless of weather, and you are trying to say you can't run a mile?"
This new lifestyle has people calling BS on my out of shape jokes ;)

As for the skinny fair weather spandex dude - "Yeah, I'm doing okay, how about you?" You never know, you might ride along for a while together, talking about ..... bikes :D

I would take it as a compliment Jay. You look pretty bad ass in that do-rag and funky colored bike! A man's got to be pretty darn secure about his manhood to ride a bike like that. :roflmao2:

Ouch! Yeah, I know I ask for it. I figure they see the chubby guy with the Kokapelli Do-Rag on the bike only Bob Marley could love and think..."I think he is crazy, we better leave him alone!" If they only knew what a ***** cat I was:o

:)... i'm a 300# dude... in middle school my nick name (well one of em) was "big guy"... i'm a self programming fatty
anyway last sat I did the tour de cure 100k (62mile) ride... I decided to push myself... i knew the shorter rides wouldn't be a problem... did it with a few club members from my MTB club... they and a number of friends and family where amazed at how well I rode it... granted we took it fairly slow... mid 15mph average (nice easy pace) and that included me riding down 3 spokes for the last 10 miles of the ride (amazing how much wobble a 32 spoke wheel has when it's down 3 of em ;-)
pic after the ride... we're planning on doing a full century ride come Oct.

In my early twenties 6-foot me barely tipped the scales at 145lb and I used to get the "Big'un" appelation every once and again. It's a country thang. Funny, nobody calls me that anymore. Got to get back to the Ohio River Valley, I guess.

i'd never done the group ride for the road... but i am a MTBer... so that may be part of it... it seemed much less boring... just spinning away chatting with people durring the ride and such... the miles just rolled by... plus i was amazed at the difference a pace line made... when those headwinds hit that pace line made things a lot smoother going.
i'll be doing another one of these road rides come oct :)

Well I'm thinking about trying a group ride for a local charity. I can't imagine doing much chatting going down the Seward Highway though! Stray a few feet one way and it's rocks and a watery grave. A few feet the other way and it's the wheels of a semi.

That was a perfect opportunity to say, "that's what she said"

I got this at a charity ride last Nov.
I was riding easy with my wife and best friend (both noobs) and just spinning along on my commuter (It would have been hard for me to go that slow on the road bike).
I'd take my time and spin up the hills and wait at the top for the others to catch up. Invariably a SAG wagon or concerned roadie would stop and ask me if I was OK, ignoring all the "healthy" looking folks (who I'd just passed) who were longing for SAG to stop and take them back to the parking lot.
At first it was kind of funny....then it got to be annoying.

This always reminds me of a story a triathelete friend told me... He and a friend were riding in the car when they saw a 300lb woman out jogging. My buddy rolled down the window and like a jerk, heckled her. His buddy stopped the car, turned to him and said, "you get out and apologize to her"
"Hell no, she looks rediculous!"
"She's out there working her ass off doing what she knows she needs to do. The last thing she needs is some jerk like you making fun of her. You give her credit-she's out there doing it while you're sitting your lazy ass here in the car."
My buddy got out and apologized to the woman who was holding back the tears and changed his attitude.
Now he's very encouraging to anyone who gets out and does the work. I'm a clyde and I don't care how I look. There are racers who sneer at me, but there are also racers who congratulate me at the top of a hill. Takes all kinds, I guess.
