Just replaced the broken rear mudguard on my commuter with an SKS chromoplastic one. Compared to the old ESGE mudguard on my touring bike (SKS bought out ESGE) , the new model is a piece of crude rubbish.
There is no fluted section to stick between the chain stays.
The attatchment to the chainstay bridge simply doesnt work; I had to use zip ties.
Evey part of the design has been made cruder and simpler to cut costs.
They have even stopped making the 40mm width which is perfect for mid-range tyres, you have a choice of racing or hybrid widths.

They had a classic product that should have been available for years to come, and they screwed it up.Grrrrrrrrrr

And I bet they came with that stupid "safety" plastic front stay block.

I couldn't agree with you more.

I bought some Zefal fenders for my MTB when I first started commuting on it in 1992. They were touted as "removable" and, yes, ANY bike part is removable if you have the tools, time, and patience, but in addition to not being readily removable, they didn't fit right and no amount of fiddling and adjusting could overcome that, at least not in my unskilled hands. So I ended up throwing them away and have not had fenders since.

My front 3/4 length clip on mudguard lasted almost exactly 1000 miles before falling off. The replacement moto-style one gives a bit more clearance for off road, but I doubt whether it will last as long even if I can adjust it so it doesn't get pulled down onto the wheel by the fork ...

Well i gave them a test ride and they work OK. I dont think they will perform any worse than the old ones, but its just a shame to lose those nice touches which mark out a special product. Still seem to be the best on the market.

Richard,
There are mudguards you can fit to the bottom segment of a sus fork attatching at the brake bosses. I think they are SKS. For regular trail riding, rather than big-air stunts, you dont need huge clearance. 1" should be fine. You may be able to fit closer full length mudguards like SKS Mountain range ( 26" x 1.6" up to 2")

Im going to attatch a dynamo style lamp to the rear mudguard, and wire it to my battery; a rear lamp that no-one can steal.
