Who's doing the Prouty on July 11th? I just signed up witha friend's team, this'll be my first *real* century ride, I'm looking forward to it.

I'm seriously thinking about it. I first heard of it from the now defunct Century Rides Around New England (CRANE) website when looking for an early July Century. I do a 10 week training schedule for centuries and since I am an early-morning-only rider in Boston, I don't find the weather continuously inviting enough to train until May 1, so I'll start my schedule this Monday.

It look like a well run ride, for a good cause, and a reasonable minimum donation, since I don't like to solicit. Last year I trained for it also but couldn't get away. I nonetheless did a "surrogate" century up the North Shore and sent a donation to the Prouty. I got a very gracious reply from the Director.

It is great:
you financially supported you, the rider
you managed a faux ride having missed the event
you sent your fundraising in
event management took time to send an individualized letter of thanks
you shared the story.

I'm pondering this ride. Hanover is about 130 miles from my house......

^^ Thanks for your reply. It never entered my mind to cycle up there and back. 130 miles is no big deal to drive, but I might need to take Friday off, and miss weekend time with the family to do the ride. The day off might be the harder to swing.

I've lost multiple members of my family to cancer, and two of my relatives are currently undergoing treatment. So when a friend from work told me about his Prouty team in honor of his younger brother he lost to cancer, I signed up that day.

I just received an invitation to a co-worker's wedding on the day of the Prouty. I even scheduled the preceding Friday off. I would go to the wedding if I did ride a century that day, but I don't think I could do it and drive from from New Hampshire to Rhode Island in time, so it looks like another year, another surrogate.

My daughter and I will ride at least the 50 mile course. I rode the PMC with her brother for several years so we are looking forward to a new string of annual fundraiser rides for cancer research. Everything I hear is it is a great event for a great cause.

Just found this thread. I did the 100 mile Prouty on Saturday. Outstanding day. Very well supported! Now, if they could have only done something about the ridiculous headwind for the last 35 miles....

Dave-i,
How'd you climb that last hill?
Congratulations!!!
Was this your first or have you ridden it before?

I did the century on Saturday with Team Hoss, it was an absolute blast.

I hung with the fast group for the first 50 miles but I dropped to a slower group after that, I started getting really dehydrated and I couldn't push it that hard for that long.

That last hill was a killer, we had a pretty good paceline going for pretty much the entire thing so the headwind wasn't a huge issue, even when it was only 3 of us riding it was manageable.

This was my first Prouty, but we plan to do it again next year.

Last hill was irritating, but not as irritating as some of the teams out there! We had three of us working together all day. Team Hoss had a million members, but was well behaved by breaking up into groups. Other teams, notably Team White Mountains, was a major pain in the ass. They would work a long pace line passing us on the flats or approach us at the beginning of the hills, penning us in with their long line, and then just stop going up the hills. It was astounding how they just could not or would not climb hills at any speed. We then had to work through them time and time again. And then repeat on the next flat section. Sheesh.. Either be fast or not.

The guidance to keep groups no larger than eight was ignored by some teams and it was really rude.

That said, it was a great ride. My only real issue is that there was no beer at the end!!!

Peletons take their own personalities far different than those same riders when they are solo or in small groups. PMC is way worse in large part due to larger numbers. The Prouty scenery and (most) riders and motor vehicle traffic were terrific.

Agreed! While both are incredibly worthy causes, the Prouty is a much more enjoyable and scenic ride than the PMC. The motor vehicle traffic point is important. Even though we were sharing (and sometimes hogging) the road with cars and huge pickups, we never heard one angry horn or comment.
