I have an old Scott mtb frame that has the under chainstay brakes. I plan to braze canti bosses to the seat stays. It seems like I have read that there can be clearance problems with cantis on some bikes. As I understand, this involves your heel hitting the brakes themselves. Is this really a problem? If so, what is the best way to check for this? Is there a minimum standard dimension that must be held??

depends on frame size and foot/shoe size. a smaller frame has the seatstays angle more steeply bring them closer to your heel, making them more like to hit. v-brakes would eliminate most of the problem (if it is a problem)

You should be able to mock it up. Put some little stick of wood across the stay with some tape to establish the width of the canti and try cycling place backwards (the stick will be in the way of the wheel). See how close your heels are.
