Touring - 10 days on a bike in Alaska?

I believe I may have posed this question already here, but I didn't get many responses so here goes again. I'm trying to plan a 10 day bike trip (that's all work will allow) for 5 guys. We go as a group each year (last year was New Zealand's South Island). Can anybody here point me in the right direction? Alaska is so big - What part of the state should we focus on? A mix of trails and roads would be best. July is the timeframe.

Id go from Fairbanks to Anchorage on the Parks hY with a stop in Denali

You could take the other hy out of fairbanks and head twords Delta Junction and over to Paxon on to Glenallen and Palmer and eventually make Anchorage or contimnue after Glenallen to Valdez . With just 10 days Id opt for the trip down the parks hy

an option would be stop and spend some time in the park then hop the train to anchorage if you get short on time.

You could also just start in Anchorage and ride twords the Kenai (sp? ) pennisla but there will be many tourists in the summer and lots of competition for campsites and hotel rooms in the area

Thanks for your response. I have a couple of questions for you if you don't mind.

What's the riding like on the Parks Highway? Wide shoulders? Traffic level? Scenery?

Would the scenery be better on the Kenai Peninsula?

My info is outdated I lived in Alaska for 4 years in the early 80's, 30 miles north of fairbanks I cant remember the shoulders on the parks HY but you will encounter grand scenery on this road as well as any place you travel in Alaska. you will also see wild life including Moose, Caribo, black and grizzley bear. the fishing is allways good in the many creeks and streams along the parks hy.

YOu could search the Alaska state web site and get a feel for what you want to see and do Ive met 5 or 6 people on the pacific coast route that had travled via bicycle from Fairbanks To Haines. The kenai is grand in its own way traffic will be heavier

alaska is such a beautiful place.... i've been looking into bike tours there but it is just crazy expensive

when I visited AK a couple of year ago, the theory was that if you kept moving, the large swam of 'skeetters wouldn't get you. Get some DEET and that'll do the trick.

What I remember from driving Parks Hwy to Denali from FBX, is the nice rolling hills caused by permafreeze. I was really impressed with the road surface in AK; much better than in the 'lower 48'; I guess they know how to design roads for freezing temps and frost.

Anyway, you should read through the sub forum in the Touring section- the one called: "Dave & Alexandra through the Americas". Dave went to Alaska there and started his bike tour from Alaska and then headed south from there.
