I'm going to be in Houston (sans bike) in about three weeks. Can someone direct me to a good bike shop there which carries a good line of clothing and accessories??

I'll be staying in the Voss/San Felipe area but don't mind driving across town.

TIA

Ed

At the Voss/San Felipe/Wethiemer intersection you have Perfromance bike on the Southside of Westhiemer and directly across the street you have REI.

And just a little farther east on Westheimer from those two shops (maybe a mile) is a good-sized Sun and Ski Sports. I usually hit those 3 when I am looking to buy something local.

I agree that this REI, Sun and Ski, and Performance are closest and have the biggest inventory. If you're bored, willing to drive a little farther, and want to check out a good shop with a little more "personality", check out West End Bikes: http://www.westendbikes.com/fsweall.html

I'll be checking out the Performance, REI and Sun 'n Ski for sure. Since I will be spending some time walking the Memorial 3 mile path, and that's not very far from West End Bike, I'll check it out as well.

I'll be there for about 10 days so will have plenty of time.

Thanks again everyone.

The taco ride takes place at west on sunday 8am and I think they rent bikes at west end if you are instrested in riding while visiting.

In addition to the places listed above, check out Bike Barn (home page link (http://bikebarn.com/)) in the Village (map link (http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?searchtype=address&country=US&addtohistory=&searchtab=home&address=5935+kIRBY+Drive&city=Houston&state=TX&zipcode=77005)). It's maybe 15 minutes away from Memorial, depending on traffic.

If they don't, Sugar Cycles does. It's a 30 minute drive from your location, but I've rented a high-end Roubaix there.

Nothing against Bike Barn, but they don't have much in the way of clothing. They have lots of everything else though.

In the Greenway Plaza area, Bikesport is a nice little high-end place to visit, one block west of Edloe, just north of West Alabama, by the Swiss Garage. On Memorial Drive itself, just east of the park, is a tri shop, Tri on the Run, on the south side of Memorial Drive, in the same strip center as a Starbucks.
This is not car from West End Bikes, already mentioned above. West End is a really cool place to visit!

In the med center area, Boone Cycles, in about the 5300 block of Crawford, is a nice place, almost a bike museum, with stuff you won't see elsewhere in Houston. One example is a line of in-house-built bikes, constructed on NOS Romic frames found sitting in a warehouse area. They are building a bike museum, too.

The Sun and Ski Sports on Westheimer, mentioned by others above, is in a shopping center where Greenridge T's into Westheimer, and is the most bike-oriented of the several Sun and Ski locations in Houston.

Bicycle Sports and Fitness has two locations, one small one in Rice Village, and a larger one on the west side of town on Dairy Ashford, if you find yourself in either neighborhood. (Houston is HUGE in land area!) The Dairy Ashford location is near what is called the "Energy Corridor."

This is just off the top of my head; I know of some more, but either can't remember the exact name at the moment, or am a bit unsure of the address/location. Ah, there are several Bike Barn locations, with one being in the Rice Village, on Kirby, south of US 59. (Yes, US 59 runs east-west for a ways, though it is better-known as a north-south highway.)

I start some vacation time on the 14th of May, and know some parts of the city VERY well, if you want to send a PM. I am not, however, in shape for long or fast rides.

Boone is the best place to find Assos products in stock, though Bikesport stocks some Assos stuff. Both of these are Sidi dealers, too, with some of the high-end Sidi stuff in stock.

I picked Assos and Sidi simply because places that stock those products are thought of as high-end for accessories by some folks.

As for high-end bikes, Boone stocks some Colnago, Seven, and such. Bikesport stocks some Litespeed and Cervelo.

Boone is good for vintage and off-the-wall stuff, and may have more Campagnolo stuff in stock than many places.

Wow, I've never seen the Assos at Boone's. Thanks for the advice.

Boone's is a good place to get fixed gear stuff too. Also, they stock DeRosa, Bianchi, and Specialized too.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I'll try and check out all of them while I'm there.

I lived in Houston from '69 until '96 but wasn't into cycling so I wasn't familiar with any shops there.

I'll be in Houston from the 22nd of May until the 1st of June so I may look into renting a bike and maybe participate in a ride while there.

Thanks again,

Ed

Yes, Boone has Assos, mostly bibs and shorts, but a few jerseys, too. IIRC, more women's Assos clothing than men's clothing. Boone is indeed a DeRosa and Specialized dealer. Boone is the only Houston place where I recall seeing Brooks saddles, but they don't stock many at once, and they also have that line of saddles that look like a Brooks, but with a cut-out.

Bikesport is a Trek, Cannondale, Guru, and Salsa dealer. I have seen more Fizik saddles there than at Boone. I think the only Assos I have seen at Bikesport are the bibs. Bikesport is a major place for triathletes to shop.
