I done it a few times and had a lot of fun. They used to let you camp at the fairgrounds, much better than staying in a motel.
Also, there was a group that had a car show downtown Paso Robles at the same time. It was pretty cool if you like older cars that are daily drivers.
They used to have activities at the fairgrounds, too. RAAM racer Pete Penseyers had a slideshow, I enjoyed that.
The hills in that area have some great roads for riding, have a great time!

I live in the area and have done rides in the area on that weekend a couple of times. I also went to the bike swap meet once. I toy with the idea of camping there, but I only live 30 minutes away and haven't been able to justify the cost of camping. I think it would be lots of fun though.

There are tons of good rides in the area, through wine country, range land, etc. A good ride is parallel to the river, up to San Miguel. Eat lunch at the mission and head back the way you came. If the river is up you might be able to find a swimming hole to cool off in.

There's also a ride that goes to a private swimming hole on someone's property. I haven't been there. Twice when I've ridden in the area on that weekend, the temperature has been around 100. A place to swim would have been nice.

There are lots of bicyclists in town that weekend.

That would be Star Farm where they grow alfalfa. He has a mini-oasis with a sandy beach and an island in the middle of the swimming pond. Also has a putting green, a volleyball area, etc. Serves a few refreshments and the kids used to sell alfalfa smoothies (maybe they still do).

We're going to be riding down again from the SF area along Hwy. 1 and bike camping along the way. Planned itinerary is to start at the Daly City BART station Monday morning and camp at Capitola, Monterey, Big Sur/Andrew Molera, and San Simeon.
