Seems like bikes are 15% off already, so can't use the 20%.
Also, only six REI stores are authorized Kona dealers, so unless you live near one you're out of luck.4
Stores that Kona can be shipped to:
AK – Anchorage (http://www.rei.com/stores/16)
CA – Fresno (http://www.rei.com/stores/112)
CA – San Carlos (http://www.rei.com/stores/38)
TX – Dallas (http://www.rei.com/stores/45)
TX – Plano (http://www.rei.com/stores/95)
WI – Madison (http://www.rei.com/stores/48)

REI should not offer this deal if it isn't applicable to all stores. I bought my 2008 Ute for $500 on CL. REI will never sell the bike for that. 34% is usually the lowest discount given on bikes.

Yes, it does seems unlikely that a retailer will sell new bikes for less than one might buy a used copy of an older, less well-specified version of the bike on craigslist.

How does the Ute compare to the xtracycle for the average grocery getter, etc?

It is much more cost effective, particularly in Canada.

I don't own an Xtracycle so I can't comment on it but the Ute is great! I have hauled some crap miles from my house. The weight seemed to be evenly distributed yet the bike still wobbled. After pedaling a few times, I was able to press on as if I were on a hybrid. My only complaint about the Ute is that the ride is goofy. I feel as though I am on a bike that is too small for me while pedaling. I am 5'6". It takes some time getting used to.
The 20% off coupon fine print clearly says "Offer not valid on bicycles"

They are 15% off, not 20%.
