I've got the Crank Bros. "Candys", with about 100 miles on them. These are my "first" clipless pedals. I like them fine, but they don't spin when I flip the pedals. I greased them and they act the same. Should they spin freely, like spinning a wheel?

Nah, I have SPD's and mine don't do that. My mtb pedals don't either.

I agree with SLVOID. I just purchased a new set of Shamano PD-M520s and they don't spin freely either. They spin smoothly.

No. My Candies, Mallets and plain jane Eggs all exhibit a lack of exuberance when it comes to being spun.

Speed Play instructions state that if the pedal spins freely they need grease. When properly greased they turn easy but do not spin. Hope this gives you another view.

My Time ATACs won't spin freely, but they turn easily when I'm clipped in. As they should :)

The seals on mtb pedals cause a slight drag, also even without the seals, most clipless pedals are small and light which doesn't make for alot of angular momentum, ergo no spinning freely

well my old wellgo pedals must be had it..they spin like me in a 190+rpm sprint! My new shimano's with about 60km on them are smoooooth. Is the small amount of grease oozing out normal?

From experience, it is hard to clip into mountain bike pedals when they spin freely. I lubricated a cheap Wellgo pedal with oil instead of grease to see what it was like. They worked, but were hard to clip in sometimes because they spun too easily.

I also have a pair of eggbeaters and they have grease drag just like yours. The important thing is that they spin smoothly, with little friction from the bearings. The small amount of drag from the bearing grease is of no concern.
