I am not sure how to approach this one. I am overweight. Have been so since childhood. Some people say this is because I have a slow metabolism. I have since noticed that about twelve hours after I have ingested food that particular food is passed through my bowels. Surely that means I have a fast metabolism, or am I on the wrong track. Very curious about this one and feel this can give me an answer why I tend to gain weight so easily. What is the "normal" time for food to stay within your system.

How much food is coming back out? I always thought metabolism meant given the same amount of time between the food passing your bowels, a person can absorb more or less than someone else.

bunch of factors there.
and I'm not sure any of them are tecnically "Metabolism", except in the general sense.

12 hours is actually a bit on the long side for digestion, but not unreasonable.
Most folks seem to hover around 8 hours.

Given that, it still boils down to how effeciently you process the food you eat.
you could take 12 hours start to finish but still not gain as much energy from a single serving as someone else taking just 8 hours. You are more likely to garner more calories the longer it's in your digestive tract, but it's not a given.

Having said all that, I don't have a clue ;)
