For those that use electronics, GPS computer etc., how do you keep them charged for long rides?
I realize lights are pretty much either powered by batteries or generator hub. Lights are straight forward but powering other electrical devices doesn't seem as straight forward to me. I use a Garmin 305 HR+ that gets about 8 hours of battery life if I'm luck, I think this is below average for the device.
I have used two methods of charging/powering the device for rides longer than the life of the battery. My primary power source is an APC USB battery pack. This device will fill charge the device and still have power left over. I have used the excess to charge my phone to play games, txt, or make calls when I take the train home. I put the battery pack in my large Bento box and run a retractable USB cable to the Garmin. This system works great for one day events. I like this system as it is rechargeable and does not rely on disposable batteries.
I did a two day tour and tested the use of a solar charger to charge my Garmin and phone. This worked pretty well but this system needs refinement. In the future I may get a generator hub, likely a Shimano, and would like to see if I can find someone good with electronics to wire up a way to power a light and USB cable to power my Garmin.
