I'm going to spin out for some miles. I was going to ride from Santa Clara, out to Foothill Expy, up to Canada, the North past Sawyer's Camp, down Bunker Hill, up Polhemus, then back. Possibility of riding to Roberts, and meeting a bunch of folks.

I'm thinking maybe Mt. Tam from Sports Basement on Saturday. Would there be any takers for this, and who can find a good bikely route. I am apparently not smart enough to work the search on that site.

This would be Pete's milk run. He can do this one blindfolded (and probably does, for all we know). :D

Ignore the SF section and the middle loop in the Marin Headlands, and it's the 'standard' route to Tam.

Probably will work for me. After the cold and general misery of Saturday's ride I'm ready for hot weather.

I've never done Dalewood. Is it as bad as the local (to me) steep ones like Summit Springs, Crestview, or Club?

Regarding Saturday, I should be in for a Marin ride. If it was just me I'd probably start at Sports Basement and head directly north (no SF hills) for something like this:

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2791652

This goes counterclockwise with lunch in Bolinas (or possibly Stinson Beach) and returns on Hwy 1. It'd be 72 miles with about 6000' of climbing. But I'd be open to other routes too

From what I saw of it (I skipped it that day), it's like Summit Springs steepness (the steep section), but for like 1/4 mile or so.

I like the headlands and SF hills part... maybe just skip the true summit up-and-back on Tam, if time is getting short. Lunch can be in fairfax, I guess (light due to tam being right after).

Since for the rest of this month I'm fully involved in training on the fixed gear for the LA ride, I'm thinking about riding out to PT. Reyes, then you guys would have the option to do Tam. It would have to be a 9am start though. Anyone interested?...

Hah. See, this is why I ask for the "regular" route. Someone puts up a link with some crazy (knee-cartilage destroying) hills and suddenly the train has left the station!

I could do a 9am start.

That just means we'd have to do Dalewood BEFORE meeting @ 9am. No problem!

<Can you tell I really want to climb Dalewood again?>

Ramon, how long does the SF part take again? We could do that before 9AM

Chris, the regular route should still include the headlands though... It's not too hard, and the scenery is A+++

How about the SF Twin Peaks/Dalewood after the Tam ride?

The SF route pre-tam warmup adds probably two hours, pretty early wake up call on a Saturday.

It was a good joke. The clouds absolutely obscured anything beyond like 50ft, the rain drops made everything else blurry. The gusts of wind and cattle guards made the descent extra exciting. :)

So the Green Choo-choo train is leaving at 9am from Sports basement...The conductor will be sitting on a bench eating a Cliff bar in front of Sports Basement entrance...
All aboard!!!!
My route is straight out to Fairfax, Nicasio, Pt. Reyes (turnaround lunch)
back down 1 to Olema, Sam P. Taylor park, Fairfax (Tam option) HOme.

05-04-09, 05:31 PM
If you guys do the headlands after we leave SF I might stop for a coffee in Fairfax and see if you can catch me. If you don't get to Fairfax by the time I'm finished my Cup O' Joe then you all SUCK!
How's that for a deal?

So there are a few different options

Pete's route up to Point Reyes. From a historical standpoint we have never found the desire to make a right at the coffee shop in Fairfax and continue on to Mt. Tam. Lunch and riding back through the park kills the motivation.

Mt. Tam via the standard route with or without the Marin Headlands and SF pre-tam experience. It is also highly unlikely once returning to SF that the will to continue around the city will be strong. The hills are too steep and it will be late in the day.

Ben's route follows HW1 going up, a lot of constant car traffic :(

I like - 9 am meet-up/ standard route to Tam with Marin Headlands. Doing the SF loop would be fine, but I would do it starting at 9am. I'm not voluntarily getting up at 6am again. :thumb:

Call me crazy but I actually like Highway 1 and never found the traffic too bad. But if I had to vote for a non-Ben route it would be Headlands plus the standard loop. +1 on the A+ scenery and descending Conzelman is always a hoot :)

And 9am meetup is good for me.

LOLZ. I was thinking that too. I was muttering the classic line from Die Hard on the way out during the WCC, "Let's go to the coast. We'll have a few laughs..."

Nothing but Hans Grüber during that ride.

Ben's route is unique in that it climbs up HW1 from Sausalito. This is the miserable part as there is very little shoulder and always a lot of cars headed to Stinson beach. Once you get to the fork and go right to head up Panoramic HW the traffic will quiet down a lot. However it will be less climbing to get to the parking lot and *cough* the last three miles to the summit. It descends what you would normally climb up during the Mt. Tam race.

I started this thread, but I've never ridden up Tam. Ramon, can you put together or find a new bikely for the route you like? I mean, I'd like to do the headlands because Marco's advice is always good, but other than that I don't know one road from the other up there.

I'm most likely in for the 9am start. How long does it take to ride from Embarcadero BART to Sports Basement?

Traffic up hwy 1 up to Tam should be okay Saturday morning. But I do prefer the route on the 1st post with the SF loop as an option at the end of the ride.

I'll do a new bikely that starts from Sport's Basement and follows the standard route to Fairfax and the corner coffee shop. That way we can ride over with Pete and then from there one can either continue with Pete to Point Reyes or turn left and climb up Bolinas Fairfax to Tam. On the return trip back then do the Headlands and if anything is left in the tank hit up a few SF hills.
