I think I lost this little C clip - anyone know what it did ? I.e. is it important?

You can live without it. It locks the cup in place. Do keep an eye on things. Your friendly Campy supplier should be able to get one for a few bucks. Worth the piece of mind.

If you have the wavy washer in there it shouldn't really make much of a difference, it is kind of the equivalent of a dork disc, it is really a safety feature that you don't need if everything is set up right. That being said, replace it for 2 dollars next time you go by your LBS.
